Hi all, I've been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post. Great info here.

Anyway, I have a question. I see a lot of people here ask about selling their work and usually it's about selling to stock agencies or per assignment. What I want to know is, is anyone here selling their work as artwork? Iv'e been considering trying to sell some of my work and have been looking at the various online sites. Problem is most of the ones I come across are either stock sites selling photos for pennies, which I don't want to do, or they are selling the pictures royalty free, which I don't think is a good idea.

Any thoughts, advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here is an example of the type of stuff I'm talking about, sized down of course.

Why not start your own site selling your artwork? Many people do that in conjunction with getting a booth at art fairs, etc..

get creative in your sales approach. Check out local coffee shops or restaurants and see if they'd hang your stuff on their walls and sell it on consignment. I've sold stuff through frame shops too. They frame the picture at cost and you split the profits. Barnes and Noble bookstores rotate new artists' through their cafe areas monthly. None of these are going to make you rich, but they get your name out there. Rule one is to not sell yourself short. Don't be afraid to put what you might think is a steep price on your work. And good luck!

You have recieved some great advice from the previous two posts.

The way may business partner and I worked it was to cull the lot of images to the "best of the best" and create a print portfolio/catalog. We made several copies and took them around to galleries, frame shops, coffee houses, restaurants, real estate agecies, anywhere there were people. We left copies of our catalog with the frame shops, galleries and some other businesses that showed sincere interest.

The web site thing is an awesome idea.

Exhibit Engine would be a great solution for you, if you are mildly web-savvy.

Jalbum is free and one of the templates it provides uses Exhibit Engine. It's a powerful gallery creation software, and you can't beat FREE!

and not to take anything away from EE, it is a great program, but it was a bit more than I needed, I ended up using CubeCart for my online presence which was easier for me. It doesn't have any of the real photographic attributes EE has such as configuring cameras, lenses, EXIF info, etc.. but for what I needed it worked well, you might consider that if you're in the same position.

Thanks for the answers. I have been playing around with a website just to figure out what I want to do but will look into some of the other things. I've been using Gallery but I'm not sure its what I need.
