Well I dropped my 10-22 off at Canon Irvine... She's is spending the next 5-10 business days alone ;(
Shooting a wedding on Sat, I zoomed out to 10m and heard a CRUNCH.. thought in the back of my mind that it was VERY strange, but turned the ring a few more times and it seemed ok. Then the fun part.... I went to "un-mount" the lens from the body and it would not release!!! After turning and wiggling it i finally got it off, and it seemed that the plastic part on the base of the lens and been pushed out of the lens body,
I tried to gently push the plastic back but it would not go in. The only thing i could do was completely remove it. That is when a small plastic part fell out (I am pretty sure it was a tab that locks the cover in place). I finally got the cover back on and it seemed ok, but I did not shoot it anymore, in fear that the element might had been knocked out of alignment.
So yesterday I dropped it off, hoping it will be taken care of :(

That really sucks. My 10-22 should be here in a week or two and I just hope that mine doesn't do the same.

Weird, I was just reading the 10-22mm reviews on the FM forum and the build quality was mentioned in more than a few.
I agree with many of the FM posters: for $790+, you'd think Canon would make a more solid lens.
I guess the silver lining is that you're close to the Canon service center and don't have factor in 2-3 days shipping the lens and the same coming back.

YIKES!!!! I have no choice but to wait for the "L" EF-S version then.

It is a little plastic-y. I guess they are charging for the glass. I do really like the lens.

My 10-22 went in for warranty service yesterday too - but not because it fell apart.
I have had it for 3 months now and love the opportunities opened up by the ultra-width of 10mm, but it has been consistently under-exposing images. I mainly use AV mode, but I would have to go into M and add 50% to the exposure to get a histogram that didn't cling to the left side.
The clincher was when I did a series of tripod shots at different apertures to compare the 10-22 with the 17-55 kit lens (at the same focal lengths of 17-22mm of course). I had to add 50% to the exposure on the 10-22 to get the same histograms as on the kit lens.
Anyway kawter2 you're lucky you're only looking at 1-2 weeks to get your baby back. They told me to prepare for 3+ weeks before I see mine again.

Wow! and just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend!
The lens has probably had a longer stays--unused--in your camera bag.
