After many many threads on here I have finally made my decision - thanks to all for your views on my various questions.

After spending a good 2 hours in my local camera shop trying different lenses I am now the proud owner of a 20D with 17-40L!!

I am soooo excited now I have made a decision and will be snapping like crazy ASAP!!

Of course, as I was buying, the girl in the shop said "If you do not get on with the lens you can bring it back brefore 30 days and exchange for the 24-70 if you think thats more you" Talk about trying to confuse me further!!! And because of that I'm thinking....emmmm should I have gone for the 24-70?? However, the 17-40 will stay on my camera and should be adequate for all my stuff for quite a while as I am mainly into landscapes and it's also a great walkabout lens anyway.

Look forward to posting some pics!

Gary

hehe I went to a ritz camera shop (I'd never buy there though) and tried out the 17-40. It was the first L lense to grace my camera. Pretty nice lense! Although, if you're not on a budget I would go for the 24-70 :D

I'm not on a budget and that's my dilemma right now!! I have 30 days and the shop are getting in a 24-70 for me to play with anyway once I have had some time with the 17-40 so I may yet change!! Decisions, decisions!!

Go for the 24-70. It can open up to 2.8 and has more range. I'd choose that one for sure if I wasn't on a tight budget. :)

From their point of view, it certainly is the better decision to go for the 24-70 L. About 600$ better

You could also keep your 17-40, and buy a Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR in addition to your 17-40 ... or a 70-200/4.0 ... or something else...

Best regards,
Andy

Congratulations on your new purchase. :)

I've got both lenses, and tend to use the 24-70 most of the time

For the cost of th 24-70, you could buy a 70-200 F/4 L and then you would have almost any distance you need covered :D

Congrats on the new purchase! I currently have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 in addition to the 17-40 f/4L. They make a nice combination!
