Hello,

I am new here, and have enjoyed all the reading and learning that all of you provide. I have had my 300d for about 2 months now, with the kit lens. I have now ordered an 85mm 1.8... and it is in transit now from B&H. My main purpose (at first) will be indoor dance competitions... and indoor youth volleyball. I read... and read... and hope that I made the correct choice for what I need. At some point, I may need some more range... and then will have to start the choosing process all over again.

Thanks to everybody on this board...

Oh man.............you will not be sorry!!!! This lens is just perfect for those applications u have mentioned!!!! GET READY!!!!

WARNING: Don't be surprised to see purple on reflective objects when using this lens wide-open.........this is not a flaw.

I see you couldn't wait to update your sig ;)

For more range, you might treat yourself to the 135mm f/2L. Enjoy!

You're going to love it. My favourite lens by far.

Thanks for all of your support for this lens. I couldn't have picked it without this board. FlyFish... awesome pic! RoanJohn... very impressive dance pics on your site. Hopefully I will have a few turn out this good! :D I looked at a review of the 135 f/2L. wow! I think the next lens I want is the 70-200, preferably with IS. I am several hundred dollars away from that lens though! I cannot believe my wife actually let me by my 85... so soon after the camera! She MUST really love me! First volleyball game is in a couple of weeks. I will have a couple of practice weeks to try to "get it right" before the first game. Then dance recital at the end of June... and a nationals dance competition the end of July. Hopefully I will have had enough time to master, er, get okay with, the setup.

135 f2 is 1st on my wish list. Wish I had it for the recital. But the 85 is so affordable -- great value.

The 85mm f/1.8 is, quite simply, the best lens decision I've made thus far. Here are a couple of shots to give you an idea of its' low-light capabilities:

If I had to choose one lens over the others, the choice would, well, there'd be no choice at all.

Enjoy it!

Hello,

I just had to share one of my first pics with my 85mm 1.8. It isn't great... but I at least have something I can work with now.

I tried to get in to Seoul on Saturday to buy the 85. I wasn't able to make it and now I have to wait until next weekend. You just made my wait that much harder.

Small, certainly Un-professional looking to sneak past the bag sniffing demons and pow ... Amazing images. I love this lens in most any indoors condition.

BTW - Certainly for a slight hi-jack attempt. Why the self-imposed rules about professional lenses? Go to a hockey game and it's "no Sir" to the red stripes. What purpose other than to serve officials own greed? Anyway the 85 works well. Off with the grip, tape over canon and never a question.

HAHAHA!! I didn't even see the dates. The OP is probably sick of the lens by now? Have you upgraded to the 1.2 yet? Are you still alive?

The 85 1.8 is a sharp exellent piece of GLass. Great for portraits on a 1.6 crop. And....it's one LIGHT, Light, did I say light weight L-like lens. For the right subjects it's a killer!
Enjoy!!!!

double-hijack chance on the old thread --- could you let me know the availability in Seoul if you get there...i'm down at Okpo just now and would be keen to pick one up myself

Go to Seoul, get in a taxi, and say, nahmdaemoon. Mention the word camera and he should be able to get you to the most camera stores ever. If you can't find it, just go to the ancient gate and look around for camera stores. There's a nice place about 1/8km down the road called Canon Plaza (it has a 400 and 600 prime in the window). Certified dealer with a great selection. You'll have to pass about 20 photo stores on your way there. Fight the temptation. I'll let you know availability too if that's all you were asking for.

Yeah, super hijack. Sorry to the mgt.

Thanks for reminding me

Sick of this lens? NO WAY!!! To tell you the truth, I read this post... and didn't even realize it was mine! My 85mm is STILL my most used lens. I just purchased a 70-200mm f/2.8 to use at my daughter's last dance competition... and it was too slow, so I had to revert back to the 85. Worked like a charm. 85mm f/1.2, yeah, would be nice, but my f/1.8 is doing it's job. Next up, Sigma 30mm f/1.4.
