You basically need an adapter ring (depends on your lens' filter diameter), a holder of some sort, and the filter itself. A cheap way to get started is with the Cokin P holder and adapter ring, and P-sized filters from Hitech, as opposed to Cokin. The P holder has its limitations, but it is the cheapest way to go.

I can also recommend the Cokin P series holders along with filters by Hitech.

Hitech 85/P, in various strengths and gradients. Most folks start with a 2-stop soft and a 3-stop hard.

do you still get pretty good results by stacking the filters for more stops?

You should spend a few hours going through this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=224448
It is one of the best kept secrets on POTN and really taught me a lot about GND's.
