Just ordered the 24-70mm....

Get it today, if they have one is stock that is not spoken for, or I have to wait a bit.

What should I look for when I first get it....anything to take attention to?

Would posting some first pics on here be good to find out if it is a dud?

I certainly haven't had any issues with my 24-70. I would do a few tests at a few of the each respective f=stops that you normally work at. One of your first impressions is that it is a heavy lens. I'm not a fan of their hood system for this lens but have learnt to live with it.

I was surprised with this lens that it works opposite of the way most zooms do. When the lens is fully extended you are shooting at 24mm.

I think they designed it to extend when zoomed out so that the lens hood doesn't show up in the picture. From what I read, and I think I might be wrong but this makes total sense....is that the lens hood is not part of the part that zooms in and out. If the lens is used at it's widest setting it would move forward but the lense hood wouldnt. If you zoom in it moves in and hides deeper into the hood.

I THINK this is how it is but I might be wrong. (but it makes sense)

If it wasn't for this then the lense hood would have to be super small so that it doesnt show up at the widest zoom.

P.S. I suck at explaining. Since I suck so much I was bored enough to draw a picture!

Yup, that's how it works. The nice thing about the hood is that it hides the fact that the lens is extending when zooming out to wide. Without the hood on, people might think I'm zooming in on their facial mole or something, instead of going wide like I really am. :)

Hahaha, very nice with the diagram! I've thought about buying this lens, but not too keen about it not having internal focus. :-( Not that big of a deal I guess.... maybe I'm just weird and extremely picky.

I'm just wondering though, I see a lot of 17-40L's matched up with this 24-70L in peoples signatures. Why did you all choose this combo? I was just thinking it would make more sense to have the 10-22 and 24-70. Why pay 650ish bucks for an extra 7mm of width? To avoid a lot of lens changing when using the middle focal lengths?

Others can speak for themselves but personally, I'm not ruling out the possibility of a full frame camera at some point in the future. 10mm * 1.6 FOVCF = 16mm or a 1mm difference compared to a 17mm on a full frame camera.

All the "L" lenses in my current line-up perform very well with my 20D and should serve me well if I am fortunate enough to move up the DSLR value chain.

That said, impulse may overrule good sense and I may buy a 10-22mm anyway. The photos the lens produce are undisputably stunning...sub-par build quality notwithstanding.

...this is an expensive hobby I've chosen. I should give it up and do something fiscally sane involving, say, boats or planes. :-) :-)

Well I know why I got the 24-70. I got it because its a 2.8 compared to 4.

But it is possible that I will sell the 17-40 because I have a Tokina 17 mm f/3.5 and a Canon 28 mm f/1.8 on its way in the mail.

I just purchased a 20D with 17-40L. However I love the width of the 10-22 so may exchange for that and a 24-70 (starting with the 24-70). However the 17-40L is a lovely lens, very sharp and I love the internal zooming!!

Can't they build a 24-70 with internal zoom?

Interesting. I was just thinking of buying this combo. I'm definitely getting the 24-70 but I haven't figured out what I want from my wide angle lense. It's either:

17-40 L
16-35 L
10-22

The thing that I thought I'd like about the 17-40 is that I can have it on my camera and treat it as a walkaround lense if necessary. The problem with the 10-22 is that it is only for wide stuff. I feel like I'd be changing lenses every half hour.

Do people who own the 17-40 and the 24-70 find them too redundant? Too much overlap?
