Use a card reader (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/446772-REG/SanDisk_SDDRX4_CF_901_Extreme_FireWire_CompactFlas h_Card.html/BI/2312/KBID/3114).

Yep. That's the best way.
Alternatively, but way slower: Eos Utility.

Or Aperture/Light Room/iPhoto?

These programs will not recognize a tethered camera. You need EOS utility for that. As others have mentioned, for downloading pictures, a card reader is your best bet.

You can import directly from the camera by USB using Aperture, iPhoto (08 or higher for his 40d) or LightRoom.

except that it won't work that way with default settings, at least not without drivers/other things from EOS Utility. Best bet is to use a card reader, followed by EOS utility.

Hmmm yes you are right! I had forgotten as I stopped using the EOS utility. Good Spot!
