Hi,
Having shot as a second shooter for a few years I have decided to branch out by myself, I regularly use another forum (not a photograph one) and had quite a few portrait bookings out if it.
They have a brides and wedding section on there so I occasionally have a look. They make me so mad they are willing to spend thousands on the kids at venture photography but think wedding photographers are way overpriced and refuse to spend on them.
Well at least I know which brides to avoid!!

What's your point?

Hi,
My point being it makes me so cross when people assume all you do is turn up shoot and then put the photos straight on disk. When in reality it is so much more complex than that. I wish they would take into consideration the unseen hours that is spent on their photos.
Just a bit of a rant today, sorry if it is in the wrong place

Lol, yeah I can relate.

There was a DJ who said it must be pretty easy to be a wedding photographer cause all you do is just press a button.

I said, it must be pretty easy to be DJ cause all you have to do is bring a laptop and click on itunes :)

I have actually heard the opposite. My understanding is that wedding photography commands more just because of what it is, and weddings are expected to be expensive, thereby allowing wedding photographers to charge a premium. It's kind of like an Apple product: Same thing, but more expensive.

I think wedding photography's expensive as it's a full time professional job when it's done well, requires equipment and expertise, and any full time job has to pay a living wage.

bw!

I just read that blog post, and I am glad I did :D
I hope you don't mind, but I just quoted (and linked) it on my blog. (Gave you credit, of course)
Please let me know if you want it taken down and replaced with a direct link to the blog post.

I would prefer you quote an exert and linked rather than copying my work. I got the ideas from elsewhere and almost completely rewrite it. Copyright applies to words as well as photos.

That is a great link.

We are coming across this problem with some people. Last week we had a referral from another wedding. She told us she loved the images and thought we did a fantastic job. When we replied with the cost she responded "Wow that is pricey, don't you do anything cheaper?"

We honestly didn't know how to respond. We stated that we shoot as a team, provide at least 10 hours of coverage, e session, DVD and felt it was good value. I know we aren't cheap in the 3-4K range. We haven't heard from her since!

I wrote something that we are going to put on our pricing page that addresses this issue and explains the process of what goes into a wedding and e sessions.

In some cases we are driving an hour to a meeting and it is really discouraging when you get there, they are late, no phonecall and haven't even looked at your work beforehand. In the future I think I will ask people to have a look at the galleries and website before we meet .

We have had so many great couples to photograph in the past. There are lots of people who do appreciate the time and effort that goes into their wedding day photography and hearing someone say that they love your images is the best. Just remember that you have one of the best jobs and you get to record the happiest day of their lives!
