I have the digital rebel, but considered getting the 70-200 f/4L for some sports photos. As we all know, focus servo doesnt fuction in any mode but sports mode on the camera.

My question is, is sports mode "smart"? Does it know if you have a larger lens to keep the shutter speed adequate?

Try it and see for yourself, you'll learn more and remember it more easily that way.

drewmk2 - My 70 - 200 F4 L arrived about a week ago. The 300D will behave as expected, it "knows" what it has attached, speed wise and length wise. I am very impressed with the lens and it has quickly become obvious that it is a better piece of glass than I am a photographer. So much to learn so much to learn. You will not be disapointed. BTW - follow the thread that cfcRebel attached there are ways to fool the camera while in creative modes. I have not had the opportunity to try this yet, but it will come and it is useful information.

My most reliable way to get the Dreb into AI servo is the zoom trick; half depress shutter and give the zoom a quick twist; you will then feel the lens AF-ing as you put the lens on different subjects.

Works for me with my 70-200/4L

I had the 70-200 f4L for almost as long as I had my 300D before I upgraded to the 20D.

This lens was great with the rebel......

Thanks guys! It's going to be a big purchase for me . Can't decide if i want the extra reach, or if i want to replace the kit lens with a 28-75 f/2.8 tamron. I'll need both eventually!

drew - I had the same decision to make. I figured that with the kit lens I already have the range covered. I bought the 70-200 to cover the longer distance, and I bought a "nifty fifty", 50mm F1.8 for indoor shots (about $70.00). I figure that I can go back and get the Tamron later, but this way I have a good range covered. Good luck with your decision.
