1. Tried to copy Kevin's idea of a backlit image. It is nice to be rid of the face mask shadow.

Im glad I wasnt just seeing that in my post-saturday night-party mindset. Loooks like you cloned some weirdness in there.

What was the call on #4?

The call was the runner was down on the one yard line before the fumble. First and goal, they later scored the TD. A lot can happen in one second!

Two answers:

1. I have no idea!

2. At the time I was doing this, there was some smoke from the BBQ pits wafting across the area. I remember being concerned that the smoke would ruin this series of shots. This could be light hitting particles from the smoke. ?

One more from that series without the dots.

I like them Phil. I have a pretty similar photo to #4 for the winning td with 4 seconds to go. Why are you shooting such high iso? Doesn't seem like it was needed.

Nice shots Phil.

I find when shooting backlit you get all sorts of weird things showing up in the background that really take on an alien effect when you factor in the OOF caused by shooting with long glass at wide apertures. Bugs and debris in the air seem to be the most common.

Nice series at the goal line. Looks like a very nice play by the defender to force the fumble.

Phil:

those are fantastic! The color pop is so on the money. And I see even early in the game you're shooting wide open with really fast shutter speeds. I'm going to try that next week. Maybe my shots will be a little 'crisper' like yours.

Great stuff. Just beautiful results.

We lost this one 41-42 in overtime.

You are right, the high ISO is excessive. Typically, if I'm shooting into darkening conditions, I'll bump the ISO up to get a 1/2500 SS or so and then let the SS drop as it gets darker. Here I screwed up and got carried away. No need for SS this fast even with partly cloudy skies. Do as I say and not as I did.

Here is another one from the series with similar artifacts. Check the corner of the left eye, neck, and left shoulder as well as the background. I'm sticking with the smoke particle theory. It may or may not be true.

Dave,

No need to get too carried away with SS. The 1D III allows me to shoot very high ISO with only a small IQ penalty so sometimes I go overboard on ISO. A SS of 1/1000 or 1/1250 is plenty fast. Remember that 1/640 is my minimum. Don't copy my mistakes! ;-)

Phil

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Phil,

You might also check the front element and see if you have any small oil spots on it. They won't show up in normal lighting conditions but sometimes they can cause funky effects when shooting backlit. The smoke particle theory is also very possible.

Have a good week.

Dr Z - I just got my Mk III back from Canon because of a spot. I thought it was my lens but it in fact was an oil spot. Check out this link if you haven't already. It took me 10 days out and back. Like a lost puppy without my camera!:o

I really like 4, 6, and 8. The series for number 4 is amazing. 8 is a great capture, very crisp. However 6 is not a horse collar ;) still good capture
