nice effort.
I look at #1, and I see a lot of potential in this image. Some of the things to look out for:
1. Image is pretty soft. Nothing is really in focus, except the plant behind him.
2. The bright colored area behind your subject (camera left), pulls attention away from your subject
3. He's missing a finger on his left hand
4. His head position isn't flattering. If you are going to turn his head, you probably want to go a little further until the far ear dissapears, but it really depends on what makes his face look best. Typically with all males, including boys, you can get a very flattering look in more of a straight on view. I tend to never use the 1,2,3 head position for boys.
5. His seating/posture looks a bit feminine. However, I can't really see what he is sitting on/leaned against, but his lower body and upper body look to be at awkward angles to each other.

It's morning, pretty sure I posted the wrong image. :) Thanks for the input.

In #2 the picture behind the girl is incredibly distracting.
