I really like the Custom Function 4-1. If you have the time.
But it got me thinking about what happens if you need to snap a really quick picture and don't hit the "*" button.
Since I have a music festival to shoot this weekend, I will test it out, but don't want to lose a shot because I am playing around too much with CF4-1.
Anyone have an experiences like this, maybe other concert photograpghers or wedding guys?
I may be totally off base.
What are your thoughts? Thanks?

I used it for the first time last weekend for a wedding a shot, I didn't miss any shots because of it. It becomes second nature for your thumb to press the * button to focus.

As a matter of fact I shoot motocycles and dragcars and it is sooo much faster then the shutter button once you get use to using it... Focus lock is at the tip of your thumb and that really comes in handy.....

I use it for fast action, like sports or theatre photography, but not for wedding or general shots.

I never use it on my mkII. It feels really akward....I prefer the standard method of focusing. My thumb is too busy holding the camera:-)

If you use this function and also set it to AI servo then it's even better in my opinion. Because you can focus normaly (just tap it) or if the subject is moving you just hold it down. :)

My 1DM2 stays on it. The only time I don't use it is when I'm using a remote cord on a tripod.

I use it for everything with my 1DM2 even when on a tripod and using a remote cord. My left thumb is on the remote cord and right thumb is on the * button.

I'm almost afraid to ask this, but how do you access Custom Functions? Is it available on the DRebel?

I never take my Camera off of 4-1 unless it is to switch to 4-3 which still rely's on the * button for focus.
It has become second naure for me to use my thumb to focus.. I can not imagine a time or circumstance in which I could forget to focus.
I do a lot of event photography this way.
Oh yes,. set it to AIServo for sure!
