Ahhh some cycling. Nice to get back to the sport I love the most. Was nice and hot today (100 degrees) and this was a little shady spot I found.

Didn't move around much because I need to stay close for the finish. Exif should be there.

Nice shots, I dig them! Cycling is one sport I like seeing motion blur.
A friend of mine is a photographer for cycling australia and a fairfax newspaper photographer and he has shown me a few of his shots. Very similar to what you have.

Danny, fantastic stuff man and its about time you got some dirt goin too! At 16mm, didn't you just about get run over in a couple of these? Man, you HAD to be very very close.

Thanks Scott K and Rip
Funny Scott I rode my mountain bike in with my Think Tank belt and two bodies dangling off me, one with the 300 and never fired a shot from it. Even took the finish line photo with the 16-35. When I do get a fish eye I will get hit guaranteed.

Great shots Danny. Excellent choice of shutter speed. Just right amount of blur.
16mm wow, some day you will get hit and if you get that fisheye they will ride over you.
Btw. are you using on camera flash on special rig or is it just on stand next to you?
I also like your processing style. Not that usual "pump up the saturation" kinda treatment :D

They're all very blurry except for the faces. You should use a faster shutter speed to help stop motion. To do this, put your ISO on a higher....
Kidding dude... Fantastic stuff. BUT, look at your nice lens just thrown in the dirt in #5. I'm gonna kick ya when you're down for that one. (After the Karate Kid is done with ya)

Thanks Vesa. I had one 580 in the shoe and another on the ground low just off the trail trying to light up the front more.
John I'll deal with you when your gang of unruly photogs show up at my door. :p

Awesome shots! Was it shady enough that you were able to do these without using an ND filter?

Thanks Derek. Yes I used an ND filter.

okay so the question is, how do you do this?

Matt is is the basic flash over ambient juggle that you do with night football. I don't know why smug is stripping the exif now, they didn't used to. These are all 1/60s to 1/80s, 100 ISO, F-4 to 6.3. ND filter to keep the f-stops low and flash power high. Then it is just your basic pan shot from 2ft away. Like in football it is all in the balance of flash over ambient.

do you mean, how do you go about joining the melee or how does Dan get these results? If its the melee, Devane is the cruise ship director. If its Danny's results, he's obviously good but so are you. Basically, slow shutter, second curtain sync, stop down to control exposure then pan like a mad man. Danny, am I missing anything?

Also I shoot the subject pretty hot and bring back in post or you will still get blur. I usually set flash zoom at 50mm but adjust to what I'm try to accomplish. These were all shot at 1/2 power on both flashes. The 8th and 5th were shot at 1/1 on the in shoe flash at a distance of less then 5 ft, but I was shooting right back into the sun. Of course I missed the money shot #8, but it is still usable.

The only thing you are missing are your teeth when you and John show up in Cali. :p

interesting lol I can say I have never done this before and have always wondered how it was done.
How do you know what shutter to use?

How do you know what shutter to use?
It is pretty technical but I think you can handle it. Trial and error. Really just 3 years of shooting cycling and messing around with settings.

Dan thanks for all the info about how you took these incredible shots. I was trying the same panning type shots with my son on a 4 wheeler but did not get anything close to this style of shot. I see now how important the flash/lighting is for bringing it all together. Thanks again
p.s. is it just me or did anyone notice that the woman in #1 is the only one without a hand on the break… brave sole

Thanks Derek. Yes I used an ND filter.
Thanks! Which ND filter do you use (brand/stops)?

This was an ND6 I also have 4 and 8. These are Tiffen and Hoya. Make sure you get the ones that will accept your regular lens caps. I have a thin and don't like the cap that it comes with.
