These pics were taken on Sunday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The photos were shot at 200mm with the 70-200 f/4L and 20D. I cropped the shots and lightened the shadows in post processing.
It was my first time shooting Track and Field... and this is my first photo post. Hope it works.

Wow,
From a track and cross country runner msyelf, I love seeing track pictures. I raced in college and some post collegiate, but not qyite the level to make it to the Adidas meet. :(
As for this race, it was a heck of a meet, and a great finish in the 1500.
Do You have any shots of the mens 3000? I would love to see more.
Great pictures, and the second shot looks like you were setup in the straightaway by the turn @ 200
Did you use a IR or cable remote?
What shutter speed did you use?

Thanks for the comments guys! I took the photos from the sidelines, but as the day progressed more people arrived and I found a spot by the first turn. I think they announced the attendance was around 10,000 which was good considering the heat this past weekend.
The shots were all handheld (no remote) with a shutter speed of 1/500s. Looking at some of my other shots, I should have chosen a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake and motion blur. I will experiment the next time out. (I'll probably have my POTN strap by then, too :) )
Also, I used AI servo mode for the first time with the "*" button. It worked well.
I'll look to see if I have any good men's 3000m shots this evening.

I wish that I could have some equipment like pic #2. Great shots.

Eric,
I didn't take any shots of the 3000m:oops: , but here's one of the Men's 1500m and one of the Men's 100m:).
The pro photographers definitely had the better location for the finish line shots.
Thanks for viewing.

how would you use the remotes for these shots? are they aimed up at the runners and to save space they have the wireless set ups or what ?

I'd be interested in know more about picture #2. I have a pocket wizard but never thought about using it other than to remotely trigger my Bowens QUADX from the camera. This is clearly a different use ... could someone explain it or send me to a thread that does?

Have look at this one... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55030&page=1&pp=20&highlight=remote - there's some info there.
Basically it's possible to buy/make a cable to connect the miniphone jack on the receiver wizard to a camera - and hence trigger it using the transmitter wizard.

Gmen, I went looking on the web for a "pre-built" PW to camera-shutter-release for a 1D Mark II and didn't find anything. Are all these cables 'homemade'? Seems pretty clear that a lot of folks use this system.

This is the pre-release cable you can purchase: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=198049&is=REG
If you make your own, it will cost significantly less.

Nice shots of the 1500 and 100. as the saying goes, - " Location, Location, Location"
I am also interested in the wireless setup. How much, how to.
What is up with all the tape on the lenses? why?

Thank you very much. I was thrown off in all my readings by the term "Pre-trigger Motor Cord" which just doesn't sound like 'cable release' or 'remote release' or what have you that I was looking for ... must be a holdover from the old film days, eh? While I appreciate that $128 plus shipping is substantially more than might be spent for 'building your own' for the electrically handy, the trips to the ER for those soldering iron burns and that this would be a business expense for me tend to outweigh the savings. Actually, the big expense is that second body to put it on which will probably be a 1Ds Mark II. And this solution is still substantially cheaper than the $340 wireless remote trigger (that was on my B&H wishlist) that Canon sells if you already have a Pocket Wizard.
I'm also curious about all the tape on the lenses that Eric notes above.

Probably because everyone basically has the same camera and has basically the same lens. It helps you see which one is yours quicker, since they aren't carrying those around.

And blue is the color officially recognized by the 'shooting from low level workging group'? :-) Did anyone notice that piece of monster glass with the red ring sitting in the background?
One more "equipment" topic ... anyone have recommendations on the best 'short tripod' setup?

Am I wrong for liking photo # 2 better? Something about the subject matter just calls out to me... :o

Holy Crap is that a telescope? Really what lense is that, It is has to be a pro from a major publication like SI.
When I was in NYC, in Central park I saw a guy with a 600mm lense with extender shooting a eage/ hawk on top of one of the sky scrapers.

Vet, yes, you must be OLD! Eric, I believe it is Canon's new 1200mm f2.0 'Battle Lens' ... requires a tank to haul it around! :-)

It could be, but a lot of the higher end ones also rent lens. Like I was at an event and there was a LA Daily News person who had a 600mm with them along with their 70-200mm f/2.8. She rented the 600 for the particular event.

The lense in the background was the 400mm f/2.8L IS. It was interesting to see different setups being used.
I looked up the price on that lens. Yikes! Renting would be my choice...

Yeah, I didn't mean to specify the focal lenght, but some of the higher end lens can be rented, and most of the photographers for magazines or newspapers get discounts or free rentals.

Thanks for checking out that 400mm ... somewhere on these forums I think I read that it is perhaps Canon's best lens. This has certainly been one of the more informative threads I've been a party to ... I thank you all for sharing.
