So I was shooting a family session Sunday and the spot is a fave among local togs. Another one shows up as we're finishing our set and she's just using a speedlight on a bracket. I had a 53" octo and studio light with battery pack. Am I way overkill, missing the boat, or what?

Depends on how much light shaping you want/need.

You brought your own "Sun" while the other shooter just wanted to help/augment the original.

the location we used was a waterfall area. Kinda dark, so I'm sure she upped the ISO. Large group too, where I only had 4 people.
