I started playing around with my 50mm f1.8 this weekend. I have been looking at some of the great pictures on this site and was inspired to try to take some pictures of my daughter.

I am primarily a sports photographer, and this is my first shot at taking any kind of portrait type pictures of my daughter (other than those I have taken with a point & shoot or in auto mode on my SLR). I am by no means a portrait photographer, so I welcome any feedback. Hopefully I can learn a thing or two and start to get some great pictures of my kids.

I really like the first one, and was especially interested cuz I'm looking at getting a 50mm f1/8 too! how are you liking it?

I really like the composition on the photos but it seems like you were shooting at f1.8 and missed the focus on the eyes. I think the hair and the grass came in better focus on 1 and 3 and 2 doesn't quite look in focus on the hands. I had the same problems when I first got mine and they don't seem to be sharpest at 1.8, try shooting at 2.4 or 2.8 with the lens and see if it sharpens them up a bit.

Thanks for the comments.

I have just started playing around with the lens and am trying to figure out how to get the best out of it, so I really appreciate the information. I'll try to shoot it at 2.8 and see if that works better.
