I am considering a NEC MultiSync LCD 1990SX for photo editing. I would
calibrate it with the Spyder II. Good choice or not?

That monitor has a quite nice PVA panel in it so, yes it would be pretty good.
If you could stretch to the SXi version then that has a nicer S-IPS panel but a PVA is certainly a billion times better than a cheap TN panel.

Here is the cheapest IPS panel monitor I've seen:
UltraSharp™ 2209WA 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor from Dell™

Dell also offers the 24 inch U2410 IPS monitor for $599.
If you wait for it, it should go back on sale for $479, free shipping.

NEC P221W. About 400 buck through Provantage. 92% of Adobe RGB, 10 bit LUT, fully compatible with DDC for programming the LUT.
Dells have had issues with industry standard DDC programming of the LUT. Only oddball would be the U2410, of which I have not heard of any feedback for programming/calibrating the monitor.
