Challenge #242 - Bicycles
________________________________

I am a bike person. When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the human race. OK, I did not really say that, H. G. Wells did. But I feel the same way. For this challenge, please show me the bicycles in your area. Photos will be judged on artistic merit - I basically like Impressionist paintings on my wall but I wouldn't mind the occasional Kandinsky. Good luck and have fun people!

RESULTS
First some short critique of sorts:

Chisel - Tires Are Flat But She Remains Graceful - This looks like an interesting Dutch bike in a weird circumstance. It looks like it should be in a museum, but it is clearly a bike being used since it is chained outdoors, yet have flat tires. Perhaps the owner doesn't know how to inflate the Dunlop valves?

Teekay - "Birthday Bike" - Apparently the recipient is a seasoned cyclist by the way he is balancing his bike at a wharf. I like the expression on the kid's face as he struggles to look cool when he is really ecstatic about his new bike.

Kevan_G9 - "End Of The Rainbow - It seems that Kevan was in a quandary as he shuffled through several entries before settling on this one. What's not to like? It's a beautiful steel bike with top-tier SRAM components. It seems to be a scene of the end of a beautiful ride, with a beautiful rainbow at the end. I wish the rainbow was a bit more visible, perhaps burned in a bit. And I hope that the rider cinched in the rear wheel tight with the strap. Love those Ciussi bottle holders.

Rpolitsr - "Sunday Meeting" - I love this scene, people biking for health and recreation, and perhaps just to get from point A to B. Very clear and sharp photo. Where are the helmets though?

CJinAustin - "Here We Go" - Now that is a thing of beauty. And the lady doesn't look bad either! I almost missed that this is a selective color shot, very subtly done and works. I just wish the toes weren't cut off.

Car - Jump! - The Van Halen song should be this photo's soundtrack. Good stop action shot. I would prefer a lower angle for a more dramatic shot, but I have no idea if the situation allows it to be possible. I am nitpicking though.

Michael Wells - Tin Man Rides - Really strange find! I like the whimsical nature of this shot. Though the wheels were cut off at the bottom, I see it as emphasizing the enormity of this sculpture. It may very well be small, but the worm's eye view makes it seem huge and certainly adds drama.

marie - "Transport For All Ages" - Vintage marie. An idyllic street scene with classic black and white rendering. I wish the dude beside the old man weren't there as he adds clutter rather than contribute to the scene. But it's a street photo, not a directed gig so who am I to complain?

fotowkr -" Moab Slick Rock Trail" - Ah this brings back memories as I haven't been to Moab since the mid 90's. Beautiful place. The bike seems tired after a day of tackling the trails. I remember the tires I used were different from these, I had slicks that stuck to the trail like glue. I like the Joshua tree on the right serving to balance the pic.

Maureen Souza - "The Price Is Right" - This photo brings me back to when I was a kid when I used to run to the bike section of the department store hankering for one. My dad wouldn't buy me one, he was about to once but my cousin had the misfortune of crashing his bike and breaking both legs. So my bike purchase didn't materialize until years later when I scrimped and saved for my own which I parked in a neighbor's house. Thanks for the memory, Maureen :)

WINNERS

THIRD PLACE - Teekay, "Birthday Bike" - I like the clarity of this shot. And it came from a G1.

SECOND PLACE - Michael Wells, "Tin Man Rides" - I'm a sucker for artwork, I'm a sucker for whimsy. This is whimsical artwork.

FIRST PLACE - marie, "Transport For All Ages" Wonderful street shot. 'nuff said.

Thank you all, I enjoyed the photos, and I apologize for the late conclusion to this challenge.

Host note: Can somebody please close this challenge for me at Monday noon GMT? I am currently involved with flood relief work here in Manila and I don't foresee myself anywhere near a computer at that time. I will be back to judge though, promise. Thanks!

Results are up. I apologize for the delay in concluding this challenge. I am dead tired from doing relief work here in manila. We have been hit by a huge typhoon which inundated the city, killed 250 something people and rising, submerged houses and destroyed millions of dollars worth of property. This is the worst flood in Manila history, streets that weren't prone to flooding before were neck deep in water, and areas that used to be flooded a couple of feet rose to two or three stories high. The water has been subsiding, but millions of people were left with no homes. I know of friends who lost everything. But we will bounce back. I reside in NYC, and I think there is a reason why I am here in Manila, city of my birth, at this time; to help.

I am thankful for this challenge - not only did I enjoy the photos, it distracted me from the disaster around me if only for a moment. Thank you my friends.

A couple of shots (with bikes in it) taken during the typhoon. Not with a G camera though.

This used to be a busy road. Not a good day for a ride.

This busy road became a river with fast flowing current. One stumble and you'll be swept to a creek that will take you to the sea miles away.

That's crazy... It's been years since I have been to Manila (used to live in Angeles City) I do remember the roads taking forever to drain water due to trash clogging up the sewers... I guess things are getting back to normal though; a friend of mine flew into Manila Sunday on her way to Boracay.

BB, thanks for all the relief work you're doing. My wife has lots of friends and relatives there, and we're very concerned. Please be careful about infection, the flood waters are filthy. Its going to take years for many of the people to recover.

Congratulations to Marie and Michael, both very well deserved winners. Nobody can beat Marie when it comes to injecting humanity into every photograph regardless of challenge subject.

Much kudos also to BB for managing to judge this in the midst of catastrophe - and even getting some great bike shots in the process!

Congrats to Teekay and Marie. Marie's photo was easily my favorite this week...as Teekay stated...no one captures the human element like Marie! Thank you for the placing, BB, and thanks for all you're doing to help out over there! I'm sure hosting in the midst of all that was a bit of overload! The Roadside art is fairly large, I'd put the wheel diameter at around 1.25 metres. It's along a road that is sometimes used in Iowa's annual cross-state bike tour. A farmer/welder with a sense of humor! Not visible in the photo is a much smaller figure in front of the bike, riding a tricycle. Thanks again, BB, and be careful down there!

so sorry to see the disaster which is happening there Pio.
its great you can help. every single person will be appreciated
the photos you show here are heart rending . and terrifying .
awful to think anyone could be swept away with a wrong move, even now at this stage.
I sincerely hope very much rescue arrives from all over the world
what with the Tsunami in Samoa also right now and earthquakes in other places too , all will be needing so much help.

Poi,

It seems almost prophetic the comment about "despair for the human race" in light of the events that immediately followed in your country and are continuing with the following storm. If this challenge was a pleasant distraction for you, then we are happy for you.

Please know that we are concerned for your safety and those of your countrymen.

With all that was going on there, I feel a bit silly with the show-and-tell I did; it seemed so trivial compared to what you were doing.

As all you regulars know, I love cycling and have had some wonderful experiences and opportunities to bring the camera along. My computer is full of photos taken of bicycles. Not knowing which one was best, I decided to just share some with you as the week played out. I hope my antics were entertaining and not annoying. Here's one more and congrats goes out to the winners.

Thank you for the prayers and thoughts, all. I am fine, my house here is virtually untouched by floodwaters but many here do not have that luxury. Things are starting to normalize for some people, though many have lost nearly everything that they have. The relief efforts shall continue for weeks to come. Let's hope that the country is spared from another typhoon in the meantime, we dodged a huge one last weekend.

Pio, I have not been on here since July 3rd! I know, I suck- but you are the first one I looked up:) I have an old bike shot from Mexico. It is not taken with the best camera, for sure- but I like it, because it brings back special memories for me. I know the 'competition' is over, but I am not competitive anyway;)
Yiskah
P. S. Pio. if you are interested, PM me and we can share sites again. I have a few new things (not many sadly- life has been uncooperative lately-) on my myspace and facebook pages. I am back in the 'game' and have missed my baby (camera) soooo much!
Much Love,
