If you are keeping up with a few different blogs then subscribing to them via google reader (http://www.google.com/reader) (or another feed reader) is a good way to do it.

Not particularly. Just someone who produces a great blog and even better photos :)
Obviously, a completely newbie question: what kind of styles and techniques are there?

Actually, at the risk of hijacking a perfectly good thread, I'm struggling to understand the marketing value of a blog.
If you have a good site and a robust image gallery, how are blogs helping you connect with prospective clients? The same thing with Facebook, etc. I've not done any of these things because I'm not understanding the benefit, I'm sure to my detriment.

Call it a blog or call it a news page, the concept is the same which is regularly updated content, good for SEO (very good if you do it correctly) and good for prospective/current clients keeping in touch with what you are upto. Most people use their blog as an informal part of their website to share a bit more about them personally and this for sure helps clients connect with them.
Sharing pictures on facebook and the photo tagging function is one of the best features of facebook.
You post some pictures of a wedding you have shot, you tag the bride and groom in them, they tag some of their friends in them ..... and out it spreads.... before you know it a whole lot of people have been exposed to your work. I have some wedding galleries on facebook with 60+ people tagged in them!
Last two weddings I booked were friends of brides that I shot and posted their pics on facebook, the new clients weren't at the wedding because they were old school friends who weren't in touch much now but they checked out the pics on facebook.

Pretty much what Jon is saying.
It's a great way to allow a potential client to see what your work is like, and get to know the photographer's personality. By the time we meet a potential client they already know what they are expecting if they were to hire us and feel like they already know us.
You can take a look at our blog, we try to add new content 2-3 times a week. http://www.carolinetran.net/blog

A few mentioned above plus:
Jasmine Star
Angelica Glass
Blue Daisy
I also like to read Green Wedding Shoes and Wedding Cabaret. They post all different photographers and some really cool shoots (engagement, wedding, etc).
I agree that blogging and facebook are pretty important and help spread the word about your work!

When looking for a wedding photographer, the blogs were the least frustrating. Its basically a standardized format so you can compare a lot of different styles quickly. That, compared to fancy web pages that take forever to load and get used to. Its a convenience thing for your clients that are already pressed for time. You can see how the photographer has grown in their techniques and its more personal. I would search for "engagement photo blogs" and get a lot of good material. I especially like the blogs that have the types of photo's categorized so you can view just the engagement photos on a certain blog.

I got a lot of gigs through Facebook, it's growing so fast than you have to take advantage of it. Plus you can create fan pages and update your fans on any news, photos, blog posts, etc...Great tool!

Blogs can be awesome for letting your prospective brides learn more about you and connect personally. It really is a great way for you to stand apart from the crowd. I really was surprised after putting my blog out there when meeting with brides for the first time and they would know ton's of stuff about me already from reading my blog posts and actually really being interested in them. Personality is a huge part of why people hire you so a blog can help you connect.
