I'm waiting until October. Rumor has it, new iMac and Macbooks being released. Suppose to cut price and on one post at Macnn, a few weeks back, mentioned an imac geared toward graphics professionals (not gloss screen?). I was going to get a 17 MBP and just let that be main CPU with external monitor. But decked out, over $3,000. I could now get a top end 24 inch iMac and the 13 inch Macbook pro for about $3200. I need laptop for trips and long shooting days...but...I really do not need larger screen since I'll do 85% of editing at home. Is anyone using a glossy imac with any success?

Oh the tribulations of the decision process :) I've heard similar, but there's no telling. Apple gets really upset if something leaks about future products - sales dip when things like that come out. I would wait for October, but not longer. Q1 next year there will be more releases. There's no end to advancements. I would also look at the refurbished store from time to time for good deals. And to throw another wrench into your thought process, a Mac Pro Quad will run you about $2600 then add a $600 monitor and you're at $3200 and it will be faster than both the 17 MBP or iMac, hands down. Then, later, if the need arises get a 13" MB for on the road for $999 in the summer. ;)

One question: Are you currently running a mac? If not, most of that "new" technology that the future iMacs will use is already out and in use in a lot of places. If so, wait for the new ones, then buy old ones for 10-20% off

Yes, I've used macs all my life. The mac pro is pricey, Ill probably have to skip that.

I "just" bought one in May. Very nice. The glossy screen does show some reflections. I have strong backlight and side light during the day, but am still able to use it with little problems.

Photos look great. Only problem is that photos adjusted using the iMac can appear dark on lesser quality monitors like the VGA adapter one I have at work.

I have a Dell 20 FPW hooked up as a 2nd screen and other than the iMac being glossy, exposures look almost identical on both.

Gizmodo posted a story today that the new iMacs have actually been in production for a couple of weeks and are set to appear soon.

They might have the new Intel core i7 laptop chips in them.

There are predictions of new iMacs VERY soon. Some report as early as next week.

Perhaps the 720/820/920M, not the i7 860 or 870 and no way in hell the 900 series, since the other two draw much, much, much more power than the current iMac processors (and by that, heat as well, which the iMac form factor can't deal with in it's current form).

It generally isn't because they are lesser quality, but due to the added contrast (pop) of the glossy screen's you edit on.

Could also just be his profiles are screwed up and using gamma 1.8 instead of 2.2

True true... Mine's calibrated and I constantly have to remind myself to put a little more "Vibrancy" into my photos in Aperture to compensate.

Even though the screen is glossy and i'm assuming you are not editing in poor lighting situations. Shouldn't the calibration (Spyder, etc) hardware compensate for the "glossyness" of the screen so you see colors/brightness properly? That should, unless the monitor is really set up poorly, at least make photos have proper brightness/saturation. In other words, a web photo may appear bright...but in relation to the other "imaging" on the screen (borders, logos, browser interface, etc), it's no worse? I may not be explaining this well

I use a 24" glossy iMac with no problems whatsoever. I use a Huey for calibration and my prints match my monitor just fine. As long as you're in an environment where you can control the lighting the glare isn't an issue. As others have stated, you might want to hold off for a few weeks to see if Apple announces some new models. Also, depending on your budget, look at Apple refurbs. They can usually be had with considerable savings and come with a full 1 year warranty and are eligible for Applecare.
