I am still learning and was trying to test the different DOF and couldn't get it down. Can someone point me in the right direction or show me how i can test this with the current lens i have. Maybe I am not understanding the different metering mode and what they do or maybe I am just not getting the concept period. What I did was take 3 different items and placed them in one behind the other about 3 inches. And then using my camera tried to focused on 1 of the 3 items and snap the picture. Well it come out as i thought it would. (like blur out the 2 i did not focused on and bring to focus just the 1 i did focus on). Is there an easier way to do this? Thanks

You've taken one shot of a row of items. Shot resulted as you expected. So far, it would seem you're on the right track. Your posting is unclear on what more you wish to learn.

Is there an easier way to do this? As Chris asked, do what? If you want to see dof without taking a shot, theres a "DOF Preview" button on your camera. Tried it?
Seen this? Virtual Camera (http://www.photonhead.com/simcam/)
Maybe I am not understanding the different metering mode Metering mode has nothing to do with DOF as long as you have the proper exposure:

What I did was place 3 items in a row with the intention of blurring out 2 and having my focus on 1. But I am not getting the result I was hoping. Sometimes i can't blur out 2 or even focus on just 1. I am new to all of this and i think what i stated is DOF but maybe I am wrong.

Practive DoF using a fence.

XTi DoF preview is located on the left side beneath the lens release button. (You really need to read your manual and learn your camera more)

Have a look at the DOF calculator too...

http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

It covers the theory in an easy-to-understand way, and lets you plug your own parameters in to see the result...

What lens were you using for your tests?

i find it very hard to push the DOF preview button...i think that is the reason why i didn't even think it was a button...is it just mine or is that how is with everyone else that owns an XTi? The button doesn't even seem like it can be push even if pushing on it.
