View Full Version : when to expect next generation of 20D?

I know this is a common dilemma. I am contemplating purchasing the 20D. Problem is I know it was introduced in August 2004. Given that Canon likes to introduce a newer, improved generation almost yearly, should I wait a few months? Any ideas when the new product is expected to be released?

No new product information. If it does what you need, who cares what the next one is. There's a LOT of guys around here making incredible images with D30s, D60s and *gasp* 10Ds.

The equipment doesn't make art, the photographer does :)

I agree it's the photographer, not the equipment. I just don't want to purchase the 20D only to realize 3 weeks later the new one has been released. Being that close to a new release would irk me...

Better yet, wait until the next one is released and then buy a great camera, the 20D, for much less.

I'm going to put my money for a 30D release date on January 2007.

Edit:

Forgot to add this: January 27th, 2007, Canon EOS 30D becomes self-aware.

I would guess at Jan 2006 rather than 2007, which would be about 18 months after the release of the 20D.

IMO canon will release a successor to the 1dMKII and the successor to the 20D wil follow within 2-3 quarters after that release

You'll know when the next one comes out when Canon offers big rebates on the 20D to clear their inventory.

I'm eagerly awaiting the 1D MkIII, and hoping that I can afford it when it comes out!

Thanks all for the input. Currently, they're offering $100 rebate on the 20D through July 15. Is this a sign, or do you think the rebate will be much larger?

I think it is only a sign that the price is going to drop a touch soon.

Late Feb/Early Mar 2006 is most likely availability date for upgrade to 20D based on Canon track record over past 3-4 years. However, there are some reasonable (as opposed to reliable) rumors that Canon may release/announce an intermeadiate camera (between 1DsMkII and D20) in June/July timeframe this year. But a similar rumor (although somewhat potentially more reliable) proved unfounded last summer/fall. This year's rumor has been updated with speculation that it is the one they expected last year, but improved after some glitches occurred. If nothing is announced in June/July then don't expect anything until Spring 2006 in terms of Camera. Lenses may be a completely different story though, may see some in Fall of this year.

Just rumors I have read on line - take with grain of salt (or three)

So far I love the 20D. Have gone through the D30, "D60 disappointment", then with in less than a year the 10D and now the 20D. All I can say is wonderful!! I just love the speed of the camera and the image quality of the 20D the best yet. As for me who cares what’s is next to me the 20D is fantastic and gets the job done and fits my needs. Now lets go have some fun and click the shutter!!

ya know, ya just gotta go with what you want. If ya don't you're gonna miss out on what? like 6 -12 months or more without a great camera to shoot with? :( I bought my drebel 300 last october - and had a new one come out several months later. I love my 300d and I'm not sure that I would have liked the xt. If you're worried about a new 20d why not just get the latest , greatest - the 1DMKII? Or would you worry that they're going to update that, too? Get off the fence & get what you want. Don't look like this guy:(:(:(.

The truth of the matter is that all these companies already have products lining up for release. What they waiting for you ask? The competition. Nikon just release their D1x, what does it offer? a competitive model against the 1DMKII. My bet would be 1DMKIII that will bring the price closer to 20D. Think about it, they're offering $500 Rebate for the 1DMKII right now. What more clearer sign do we need??

U know what... there are no facts about releases. Just rumours.

If 20D does the job, just buy it and forget about the next one.

At this point, if I'm not shooting sports I'd take 10D hands down over the 20D... 20D is still green and has issues. 10D doesn't.

Cheers

The Mk II series is a pretty good upgrade, but i'd want more than 8MP when I upgrade. I'm hoping for a 10MP at least, maybe 12MP from the 1D Mk III. That's not the main reason for the upgrade, the main reason is the better AF and more cross type sensors, as well as the ability to beat people with my camera ;)

IMO (hopes Canon is listening ;) )

Dear Canon,

Build me a full frame 6-8 megapixel camera with 10.5 to 11 stops of dynamic range and a high ISO speed of 6400 or 128,000. Make ISO 3200 perform like the MkII does at ISO 800. I don't want more freakin' megapixels,

P.S. Don't put a stupid pop up flash on the thing

I hate the pop up flash! but I love my 10D! What I want is a lighter lens with the quality of the 70-200 IS 2.8. They have the cameras doing great things, what we need are lens that don't scream 'here I am' to everyone within 1000 yards or weight mega pounds. Just my humble opinion...

I use the pop up flash occasionally, even though I have the 500EX. I probably wouldn't care if they removed it though. Does the 1D series have a flash built in?
