My neighbor's dog was hanging out in the backyard and I was dieing to test the AF of my 20D with a Tamron 1.4TxTC and Sigma 500 f/4.5. Thes two shots were done at ISO 1000(oops! ISO 800) with 20D + Tamron 1.4X TC + Sigma 500mm f/4.5, lousy overcast lighting, AI Servo AF.

It appears to work extremely well. You sure get a narrow DOF at f/4.5!
Cute pup.

Since you mentioned DOF:

You said lousy overcast day, how was the focusing and tracking performance? Did it seek a lot?
What was your ISO again? Did you mean 1600?

The 20D acquired focus and tracked adequately as long as there was adequate contrast which can be lacking on an overcast day. It wasn't as quick as the 1DM2 but acceptable. ISO was 1000 (correction: ISO 800). This is not possible on a 20D with a Canon 1.4x.

I was reading your caption, said the 20D at 1000 iso. I didn't think you can dial up 1000 iso with the 20D.
Were they full crops? I keep noticing the speckles(noise?)around the shadow areas; Rosie's eyes and nose, even around the ears, especially the bottom shot.
Unless that's a characterisitic of applying the 1.4 on such a big lens, I'd expect 1000 iso to be a little cleaner.
In any case, that's a lot of magnification and my experience with long lenses are minimal.

My error. I was using 2 cameras. The 20D was at ISO 800.
The noise comes from trying to get some contrast/sharpness on an overcast day and high ISO.
