Ok well my Kit lens is gone and I need a replacement. The main thing I will be using it for is indoor candids.
I am limiting my search to lenses with f/2.8 aperature.
This is the list I have now. They are in no particular order. Well thats wrong they are in the order B&H lists them on their website. :)
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 $1104.95
Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 $419
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 $439
Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 $359
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 $339
Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 $219
Tokina 28-80 f/2.8 $469
Ok well since the budget is $500.00 that rules out the Canon.
And before people start suggesting Primes, I dont want them. I also plan on getting a 10-22 EF-s so 28mm is wide enough for this lens. I wouldn't want to go any higher though.
I think the Tokina's are out due to build quality and slow AF. But correct me if I am wrong.
I have heard a lot of good things about Sigma and Tamron. I would like to hear your suggestions on which of these lenses would be a good investment.
Any suggestions need to cover the 28-70mm range, and can over lap a little into my other lenses.
Thanks

Sigma 24-60, Sigma 24-70, Tamron 28-75. They are all very excellent 3rd party lenses.
The older Sigmas seem to have problems, but they have vastly improved with the new DG and Macro designations.
The Tamron seem to have a little more trouble focussing in darker situations.
I'd probably pick up the 24-60 simply because it's slightly smaller and the newest. The distance between the 60 and the 70 that your zoom starts at can be covered by foot zoom. Good luck!

There is another option of Sigma 18-50/2.8. I don't have any experience, though.
I personally use Tamron and getting very good results. I also had Sigma 24-70, but didn't focus correctly on my 20D.
However, for indoor stuff, f/2.8 may not be fast enough.. In such case, the combination of 35/2 AND 50/1.8 for total of ~300 may be worth consideration...

I'm in to available light photography and for the kind of shots you want your lens for 2.8 will not be enough half the time. It depends on how well the room ect is lit.
easy to test that with your 50mm at 1.8 and 2.8. I had a 16-35 F2.8L, my primes left it for dust in low light, and just wasn't as sharp as my primes wide open. So back it went
These two shots were taken in pretty dark bar in town, 2.8 just wasn't good enough for the light

the first my partner Diane, taken with an 85mm 1.8 at F1.8 and the shot of me was with my 50mm 1.4 at F1.4
I don't know how low the light is you want to shoot your candids in, but 2.8 will let you down alot more then 1.8 1.4 will

I agree Sean-Mcr, but I cant afford 3 primes to cover the range so I must compromise. And I can always fall back on my 50mm if things get too bad.

F2.8's too slow for indoors in low light, in fact F1.4 is too slow in some cases but i'd not go faster due to extremely short DOFs. My suggestions would be 85mm F1.8 or the 50mm F1.4, both of which are under $500. The decision between which one would be made on the working distance you want, and if you want F1.4 or F1.8.

Ok I went with the Sigma 24-70 from B&H. It covered the range and has macro-like abilities. I may be sending back. I almost bought the tamron but it was out of stock and I wanted for the holiday weekend.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Lost - This is prob too late, but in case you were really looking for the Tamron -- I just bought the Tamron 28-75 at NY Camera in Southampton, PA. I picked it up in person a few hours ago, but they have a web site:

Well I got home last night and low and behold theres a message on my answering machine about verifying my CC info. Crap and I paid for overnight shipping.
I called them up and verified my info and they changed the shipping to 3 day cause I am going out of town and only charged my 1/2 the 3 day price. So I wont have if for the holiday but I will have it at a lower price.
Compramises :)
