Ok, I have a senior session this Saturday (maybe) and need some creative input. She is wanting pictures of her with the following themes:

Violin
Flag Corps Flag
SwordsI'm ok with ideas for the violin, but am having a time trying to figure out how to incorporate the flag and swords. I have an idea or 2 for the swords, but want to see what others can come up with. I will be shooting each theme separately and together. Muchas gracias.

I have to be serious and frank here...if you're taking on the job of taking pictures, coming up with picture ideas is your job.

I'm not really sure who Frank is, but let me see if I get the gist your response. You are criticizing me for coming to a forum of some 213,000 photographers and asking for some creative input? It's not like I asked, "Who are you insured through?" Which, btw, has been asked and answered ad naseum. I'm sorry if I thought maybe, just maybe, someone on here has had an experience with photographing someone with swords or flag corps flags and they might be able to come up with an idea. It's good to know that there are people on here who are as helpful as you are. That's what makes POTN great.

I feel your pain, it's too easy for people to hide behind a computer and talk down to others like they're Ansel Adams...sometimes it gets very frustrating here!

I had a senior shoot last year with a girl who wanted the same thing, but a rifle instead of a sword. I had a hard time with it and didn't like any of the pictures I came up with including those items. She absolutely loved all of the other pictures, but the rifle and flag were a dud. This year I have a similar request and a friend suggested some action shots of her performing. So...I'm going to her senior night football game and I'll take pictures of her performing on the field with the flag and rifle. That's on the 9th, so I'll let you know how that turns out.

The only other idea I had was to go to her school and take pictures of her on the football field with her equipment. The hard part can be getting access to the field though...

Good luck!

I agree with a521, RDKirk's response was less than helpful. I may be new here, but I thought the purpose of these forums was to discuss problems and come up with solutions, or at least suggestions, by sharing knowledge and ideas. If that's not the case, I guess I'll go elsewhere.

As for the flags and swords, I guess what you do will depend on her personality. If she's up for it, maybe she could wrap herself in the flag. If she's really outgoing, she could wear shorts and a tube top (do they still make those?) and then wrap the flag in such a way so that it appears that she's wearing nothing else. That might be a little risque, so maybe not. You could just do a shot while lying on the ground (you, not her) with a wide angle lens. She could be standing with the flag planted in the ground near your camera or something.

As for the sword, how about taking a shot where she's holding it over her shoulder, kind of like a rifle, but use the sun so that it glints off the steel and reflects light onto her face. That might work.

Just my thoughts. Stay with the forum. Most members are happy to share their knowledge.

The good news is that, after 14 years of officiating football, I have some decent athletic director contacts. I might be able to get field access. Thanks for the input. That's precisely why I posted the question.

How did the shots turn out? I have been asked by a friend to take a few Sr Picture shots of her daughter next week and I went driving around last night and found some great backgrounds downtown with some old buildings, graffitti on the walls, train cars, etc. Makes me nervous about shooting these since I just picked up a camera for the first time a couple of months ago but I really love this new hobby and it seems to take my mind away from the day-to-day garbage that all of us have to deal with on a constant basis. Hope the shots turned out great for you!

We weren't able to do the shoot. She got sick the morning off, so we rescheduled it.
