I will hopefully be buying a camera in the next few months and I've narrowed it down to these two options.
Digital Rebel XT + Canon E 70-200mm USM f/4.0L
or
20D with Kit Lens.
The purpose of this camera will be for hobby/recreation product/portrait for professional web design.
Am I going to be able to get the same images out of an xt that I will a 20d?

There is very little (if any) difference between the images from both cameras, especially at web sizes.

Anyone else?
The main reason I ask is because most 20d images I see are sharp and clear, while most of the 350d photos I see arent. It is almost like I can discern a 350d picture over a 20d picture.
It could be lens, skill, etc, but it seems to be a trend.

HUH!!!??? That statement is absurd.............there is NO WAY anybody can consistently discern a shot from an XT to a 20D...........you might get lucky, but there is NO WAY!!!
It's all about optics..........and skills..........
So with that, I say get the XT with the better optics...........and practice your skills................  Trust me, your shots will even look like it came from a 1D MKII!!

I figured it had to do with the optics and skill.
Besdies,.....I guess i never saw your pbase galleries. You have proved my theories wrong. Nice stuff. I do notice you do use a lot of fast lenses though.
Wow.....this image sold me http://k41.pbase.com/u15/roanjohn/upload/41967076.IMG_8995copy.jpg

Thanks bug!!!
Now hurry and buy it!!! :-)
I use a lot of fast lenses because I am ADDICTED to 'em. I am a big fan of available light shooting. I haven't used the 70-200 much recently because its one of my older lenses (you tend to use the ones you got recently more often). BUT, everytime I put that lens on my body, the images never ceases to amaze me..........this lens is STUNNING.!!!

If you mostly shoot telephoto, then yes. An even better combo is the XT, kit lens and the 70-200 f4L. And because you started in the right path, reward yourself with the nifty fifty.......... :D (thats the 50 f1.8).

Yeah that 70 may push me out too far for some close shots. I can get the xt and kit for around $850 and the 70-200 f4L for $560 which would put me around $1600 after a CF card bigger than my 512mb.
Not horribly bad. Certainly better than my 2.3 MP Vivitar POS. I have yet to get a decent picture off that thing. Not even a half decent picture.

buginajar,
just practice with what you have, the techniques are the same no matter what kit you get,
i was using until last week a sony DV camcorder stills capture at 1 megapixel point and shoot and got these results.

I have a 350d with the kit lens and am hoping to get a 28-105 and a 100-300 USM from ebay, i would love a "L" series lens but i cannot stretch to.
got these in the rain this week with 350d and kit lens

I think it comes down to skill and experience. The XT is more entry level, so less experienced users will often be using it.

If your only lens is the 70-200, you will miss a LOT of shots -- 70 is quite long. The 17-85 is a much better all around lens...

EXACTLY! becuase its cheaper, more people use it as their first camera. therefore the shots wont be as nice as someone who has had a few cameras and stepped into the 20d. i really doubt that the quality of the pics is much different, if at all. the 20d is more about weight, build and some extra bells and whistles. as for teh chip i believe the xts chip is very similar to the 20ds. you must be witnessing user error. give the same guy the same 2 cameras and i bet you wont be able to tell his shots apart.

Let me try and confuse you further :) .
Consider the Drebel + kit lens + 70-200L. Leaves you with some change over both the options listed!!??

Thanks for all your advice.
I think I've narrowed it down to these two options
350D + Kit Lens + 70-200 f/4L
or
350D + 17-40 F/4L
I Will be taking portraits/family candids & photographing softball/baseball games as well as anything else I can capture.
I'm thinking that if the kit lens is of decent quality (which it seems like it is from other posts on this forum), I should get the XT/Kit/70-200 package. I would get more options and have a little bit of reach.
Thanks for bearing with me. I'm obviously new to the hobby, but I have another question.
200mm Zoom would be equivalent to how far in front of you? Compare distance to a football(American) field.......
17mm?
40mm?
70mm?
50 or 85 seems to be a good portrait length. I guess I'm just looking for more clarification. I saw the little flash app on Canon's site that shows focal length, but its kinda hard to gauge from that app.
Thanks in advance.

You're absolutely right. After looking at some photos from a 350D kit glass and L-Glass, I can definitely see the capabilities of the 350D and I'm not dissapointed.
I kind of figured it had to do with skill.
Do people do professional shoots with 300's and 350's?

If the 350D can take the same pictures as a 20D does it really matter if they do or not?
And yes people do shoots with everything. heh.

Sorry to drift off topic guys.
roanjohn, you have made my day, cheers. Yes they do look very grainy perhaps over use of USM to get a deasent picture, i have since found the capture to memory stick bit must be faulty as borrowed another Sony DV camcorder with ther same 1 megapixel capability and got clearer results. The video to tape bit still work perfect. this may be due to being dropped from the pit lane 10 ft to the track one time (oh thats my chance to sell on ebay down the swanny).
got more panning practice at a car track day where they we going a bit slower and got a corker of a shot of a Lamborgini (see Post).
I have not shot so many frames since i first got my Practika MTL3 in 1978. I am very happy with my 350D (would also have been happy with a 300D or D70 or even a c765 come to think of it) it has made me think of new angles and ides as most of the time it takes only a few goes to get the shot i had in mind. Shot all sorts from 30 second night shots through motorsport and landscape to Morris dancing this weekend. buginjar will be well chuffed with his kit when it arrives, i to hope to get a nifty fity soon too.
Oh before i forget buginjar don't be affaid to get the Lexar 80X pro cards i use one and as long as i am carefull not to use the pay button to quickly after shooting RAW+ L-Jpeg it is fine and fast too. i wonder what else Canon will sneak into the fireware upgrade, hope it's not like the ver 2.0 for 20d i have heard about with more noise.
