Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 10D. Well, will be keeping the 10D as a back up.

Main reasons I want to do this is as follows:

1. I want wider angle shots. 1D can do this (x1.3 sensor)
2. Want to be able to shoot teathered for product work in the studio (1D has Firewire)
3. Need a few more pixels (not as important though).
4. Want less noise at higher ISO.

So the 1D MkII would suit me for the above and I also do the occasional motorsport work (not as much as I would like though).

OK, the questions (mainly related to my studio workflow).

1. If you are shooting in RAW + JPEG mode, can you have the RAWs sent to the CF card and the JPEGs to an SD card ? I cannot find this info anywhere. This would be ideal for me as I can use the SD card in my Epson P-2000 for quick viewing and do the CF based RAWs later on.

2. When shooting teathered, can you still shoot from the camera or do you have to shoot from the computer ?

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian,

I recently bought mine and love it. The superfast fps would be ideal for motorsport.
As far as your questions are concerned, I don't know about No.2 but , Raw+Jpg cannot be saved to different cards.
You can either shoot to one amd have the camera backup to the other automatically, or you can switch to the other card when the first is full

Ian... no you can't send JPGs to one and RAWs to another, but you could run it in "Backup" mode where it writes everything to both cards. You could then just ignore the RAWs on the SD card.

Don't know about number 2, I am afraid.

Sorry my english is a bit bad so no idea what teathered means. But if I understood right you want to have camera connected to computer (over firewire) and you are wondering if you can shoot by pressing shutter button OR release button in Remote capture software on computer. Right? I tried this only few times, and even this just for testing (I shoot outside most of time and I don't do studio work) If I remember right you can shoot both ways. You can even choose if you want to send photo straight to computer or you want it to be stored on card too.

Ian,
The one time I shot tethered......just to see how it worked. The images are saved to the computer file you set up not to the CF card or SD card. I hope this answers your question. Everything is the same on the camera end. The change is how the images are saved.

I shot tethered for a "photoshoot" of my daughter and her friends during her birthday party. It worked out well. Instead of crowding around my camera to see the shots they were able to see them on my laptop as I shot them. Kids today need that instant gratification. I worked out well. I am sure that I did not explore all of the possibilities of shooting tethered. I worked and was fun for all.

You are making a wise decision. Now is the time to buy a 1D Mark II. All of your reasons are valid and sound. Good luck.

Thank you everyone.

I can live without the RAW and JEPG split between cards, would just have been nice. But having the ability to shoot both ends when tethered was important to me so that is a result.

Again, thank you everyone. right, time to go shop. :)

Cheers

Does anyone know of a wireless setup to do this?

Canon does make a wireless add on unit for the 1Ds/1D Mark II. It is about $1000 and very cumbersom to set up, from the reviews I have seen.
