Have any of you tried Adobe's Digital Negative converter? With all the RAW formats around it seems to be a good idea - at least for archiving.
I'm in the computer field and have seen tons of file formats come & go so it would be nice to have something like the .jpg format that has some staying power. This RAW-format-of-the-day that we've been dealing with will clearly be a problem down the road.

I have used it and it seems very good, and although I have not been able to see any difference in the photograph, I am slightly concerned because the file sizes are smaller then the CR2 file format so I am concerned I may have lost some metadata I might desire later.
I grant the possibility that DNG just does a better job of compressing the raw data then CR2 does, but I don't know at this point.
On the other hand as I upgrade my archive CDs to DVD I am converting to DNG from CRW format, so I have the new copy in the newer format just in case, gives me better potential for longevity of data.

Another advantage with DNG is that the files are smaller (without compression). A friend of mine shoots raw only and he converts all his raw-files to DNG and throws away his original raw-files and use the dng-files as his originals that he backup on several places.

OMG... the thought of converting all those files....
I think I'll hold off for a while. Who knows.. maybe DNG will disapear before .CR2??

The D30 RAW file format isn't supported any more, that camera's what, 2 or 3 years old? I plan to wait and see if DNG becomes a widely adopted standard, if so then i'll leave my computer batch processing from RAW/CR2 to DNG - I think it'd take a h3ll of a long time, hopefully less than a day but I wouldn't bet on it.

Thanks for your replies. I believe I'll give this new format a try, but as Longwatcher does, keep the original RAW files just in case.
Technology certainly complicates things.

This is one of the reasons I didn't want to get a digital camera  Its hard to keep up with changing formats etc. I do worry that in 10 years time I won't be able to read any of my .cr2 files. Guess I'll make a DVD of each format as suggested. With all the digital cameras around hopefully some standards will be maintained.

Has anyone who's worked with DNG noticed a differnece in how the images "manipulate" in a RAW converter?
Do other RAW converters work with DNG? (C1, Rawshooter, BreezeBrowser ? ) ?

The D30 RAW file format isn't supported any more,
That's not really true.
DPP does not support it.. and this is of course a significant situation with frightening implications,.
but the FVU still supports it,. as does C1, RawShooter, Breezebrowser, and ACR among others....
