It's what I use. If you want to spend more you can buy the Canon one. If you want to spend less, buy the simple remote to lock the shutter open and use your digital watch to count the time down. Depending on your camera, you can also use your laptop with suitable software.

Yes, I always forget about that. My 450D came with PC software that allows you to control the exposures really well. With a remote shutter you're generally restricted to up to 30-second exposures if you want to do it completely hands-off. With a PC connected you can set the exposure time to whatever you like, and also set the number of exposures. You can then keep an eye on your PC screen with the camera does its thing and displays the results on-screen.

I would highly recommend you trying Nebulosity. It will control your camera over a USB cable and has some very useful frame and focus routines. Its as simple as a piece of software ever could be and works very well out in the field. I have found it to make a huge difference to shooting with a DSLR.

What camera do you have ? I have the XSi and i use the RC-1 Remote (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Wireless-Remote-Control-Digital/dp/B00004WCIC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254456623&sr=8-1) . The XSi has a selector for a remote and when you set the camera to BULB and snap the shutter the LCD has a visual timer that you can watch and expose as long as you want . All the RC-1 does is snaps the shutter then releases the shutter when you trip it or you can set the camera for 30-secs or shrter and trip the shutter with the RC-1 and the camera will take care of the exposer itself . BTW you can attach it to your neck strap and not loose it .
