I love the 50D and all but am I the only one who thinks that the grip (BG-E2N) does not look right with it? If you notice the left part of the body/grip, it doesn't fit. There's something like a crease between the body and grip. Proof: http://******/zOJa

The new grips for the 7D "blend" better with the camera....
However, I think all grips look ugly.

does the look of the grip on the 50D impair your shooting? get some compound, mold it till you're happy, sand it down, paint it black. voila...

who gives a crap.

I don't think it matters, unless it doesn't match your Louis Voutton camera bag.

Anything with a grip from an XXD to the XD series is really fugly. I can't stress it enough. Thanks! :)

I always thought Canons vertical grips weren't designed as well as Nikons.

If you don't like the looks of the grip, why not paint it to spruce it up some...heh...heh.
It's funny, I have the grip and have never thought about how it looks!

I've never paid pay attention to my grip. As long as it holds the batteries and the shutter button and control buttons work, I'm happy. BUT, the grip on the 1D is outstanding in my opinion. Fits my hand like a glove.

I hate the way the grip "flares out" just to accommodate AA batteries - why cant they have the grip follow the contours of the camera instead of looking clumsy and having a big bottom?

(like the grip on the 1D series which is absolutely wonderful)

The flare on the base is to form a good hand hold similar to that on the right side of the camera. If it kept the same dimensions as the base of the camera , it would feel very narrow to most people when shooting portrait.

Agreed, but the degree of "flare" is a lot less pronounced on the 1D, and it is still a very hand-holdable camera. From the back, the 1D series almost look flat, and there is just a a small lip/grip at the front of the camera. It looks a lot more elegant than the grips for xxxD/xxD series.

Well, apparently I do. It doesn't impair my shooting and will not impair it because I'm not going for the 50D but the 7D, if nothing else but the grip that I will buy with it. 7D's grip is contoured perfectly to its body.

Exactly what I'm talking about, man. That grip is fugly.

The Canon optional grip/battery holder designated for the 50D is not the best fitting and/or prettiest grip beholding this great camera body, but it works. Too bad the grip does not flow nicely in comparison to Canon's higher end-line camera bodies such as the 1Ds Mark III and 1D Mark III models. ;)

You based your decision on the way the grip looks?

+1

The 50D grip was originally designed for the 20D which is a different size (smaller) body

They don't fit worth a dam* on the 20D either...

However, if you think the grips for the current crop of digital cameras are ugly, just look at motor drives for the old 35mm film cameras:

Or even the vertical grip for the Canon A2. And this wasn't even a battery grip...
