Read the title^^

Was considering buying an ASUS 24" Full-HD (1920x1080 [1080p]) monitor and having it calibrated using a Spyder. Is this a good idea?

If it has an IPS or PVA type display panel, probably yes. If it doesn't, definitely no.

In general, say away from 1080p displays, 95%+ of them are not as good as 1920x1200 screens in the same price range.

For TN vs IPS vs PVA, there's always google, but basically, IPS or PVA is the way to go, and IPS is easier to calibrate than PVA usually.

This forum gets a lot of "is this monitor good for photo editing" questions. I think an excellent way to answer that question yourself is to go to the Eizo website (http://www.eizo.com/global/products/coloredge/index.html) and read the specifications and features of a professional level graphics/photo editing display. These are the features to aspire to.

In the more common realm of affordable LCD monitors ($250-$800 USD), look for the before mentioned IPS or PVA display panel, DDC capability, and at the higher end, built in 10-12 bit LUT. Personally I'm looking hard at the new Dell U2410 which meets all these criteria.

I haven't quite got the space for one of those but can just get by with the 2209WA which also gets good reviews.

I have the 2209WA and it's an awesome monitor. Just think... You can have an array of four 2209WA's for less than the cost of one Eizo!

But no 12bit LUT on 2209WA... U2410 has that, and you can get two and a half to three of them for the price of a 24" eizo

As I said... I'll be getting just one U2410 ;) from Santa this year. (He usually arrives at my house a month or two early!)

U2410 looks nice! How come Dell is the only mass-marketed company that can create monitors like this? I would love to see companies like ViewSonic make an affordable IPS monitor.

"Full HD" just refers to the resolution of the monitor. Which isn't that relevant. You just need a size and resolution that fits you, and then get a good panel. Anything that has at least 1920x1280 or higher resolution can play "Full HD" video.

Yeah, I was just saying Full-HD because I would be running it through an HDMI cable, if that makes any difference in color/quality. I am considering a that U2410 now, the HD monitor is out of the question.

You know you can run 640x480 though hdmi, as well as now up to 2560x1600 right? HDMI means nothing except that you can't use an apple display and for a good portion of the market you need an hdmi to dvi-d converter.
That aside, go with the u2410, it will likely become the new standard in photo and production for companies on a budget.

I believe I am going to go the U2410 route also. Since it is new, do you think there will be any promos coming up in the near future.

Who knows. Dell is really good about running constant promotions on popular products. Since they know they are the only company that makes a 24" IPS monitor for that price, it will probably stick until competition catches up.

There are other 24" IPS monitors for that price you know... it's the 24" IPS monitor with 12bit internal processing that no other company does... at least not at the 0-$1000 price range....

I bought an HP LP2275W a few months ago and am very happy! Calibraed with Spyder 3 Pro. I game as well and have had no issues. Worth a look.

Good Luck!

It's more like using crayons when you should be using colored pencils... Once OLED comes to the same level as LCDs, it'll be like oil paints ;)

Dell 2209WA arrived today and what a difference. I thought my old Iiyama CRT was good but flippin 'eck this is great. Straight out of the box and set up no problems, no dead pixies but ever so bright. Anyway after I put the sunglasses on and re-adjusted the brightness it was great.

My calibration setup (Spyder3 puck with ColorEyes software) tells me that 15% brightness setting corresponds to 120cd/m2 luminance. YMMV.

Thanks for that - I've not properly calibrated yet, will buy something at the week-end.
