View Full Version : Anyone Else Bored?

I find it somewhat ironic and frustrating that captures of the moon outgun most every other post in both comments and views. Don't get me wrong, but unless there is some remarkable processing or natural event, such as a lunar eclipse, they all look the same. Anyone out there interested in a discussion on anything other than how to improve moon captures? What about shots of splashes of water? These are interesting, but how many times must it be pointed out that these are mostly luck? Perhaps we can discuss ad nauseum using layer masks to combine 30 captures of one self into a cloned sheep party. Yes the word word sheep is a pun, and intentional.

yep, moon shots is quite boring. However if you can capture something in the foreground with the moon it's makes it interesting.

After awhile, even splashing of water will be boring, it is how well you can make it interesting. As one teacher said to me once, "It's all snapshot till you make it interesting".

That is a great quote. Also great advice.

mbze430 brought up a point that I've been thinking about since I went digital.

What's the difference between a snap shot and a photograph?

For example, this photo (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=75823) was taken as a snapshot (well, they move so fast I had to). For me it's a half decent photo, while for others, I'm sure, it's just a casual snapshot.

What do you think.

What's the difference between a snap shot and a photograph? The price of the camera. I took a look at your link. Nice pic, left comments, thanks for link.

I don't think it's the same people posting lots of moon shots. I posted some recently, as a test with an old Tamron 400mm lens.

It's not so much the reduncy that annoys me as is the overwhelming response to the reduncy. I wouldn't even mind if someone told me what I posted was garbage, as long as they qualified it. My assumption is that most of what I, and many others post is average, at best. Since it isn't terrible or outstanding, no one feels compelled to comment. I am calling for input that will enable me to move from the realm of average to at least better.

Then they say "thanks for sharing". What?

Nobody has worse photos than me, but to...lie about it is just...I don't know.

I like shooting "an experience" . To me that is music, clubs, concerts, sports, and candid street shots. I do also find some nature and architecture an experience, but it is harder to find something in those categories that makes me excited. I like capturing the emotion with the shot.

I have gone out and wanted to shoot for 3 hours and been bored, so I packed up my gear and went home.

There is two quotes I like, that pertain to a lot of things, and kinda how I flow.

"If you love your job, you will never have to work a day in your life"

"Work like you don't need money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching.

I thought the whole point of a forum was to click on something that interests you.
If lunar photography doesn't do it for you don't go there.

I think most give it a try and post their efforts and therefore there might be one to many.
Then someone explains how to improve the shot and around it goes.

I'm not complaining about lunar photagraphy, per se, my complaint is the lack of support you are saying in the second part of your post. This isn't happening with most of what I post. With only a few exceptions, I seem to get very few responses, let alone meaningful input. I sometimes try to engage a person that has posted in a discussion beyond "nice pic" or "you stink," with mixed results. Usually some overly enthusiastic member takes every word you type with it's absolute literal meaning, and a side argument develops that really has no relevence to the thread. Actually, this doesn't happen too much what I post, that is pretty much ignored.

"Work like you don't need money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching. Those are great words to live by. I too like to photograph the way you describe, but sometimes have difficulty conveying those emotions through photography. It becomes a matter of stripping the image down to bare essentials you need to convey a meaning. I'd like to hear ANY thoughts on whether you've felt this way while creating an image, and possibly what you did to capture it. It can be someting as simple as the composition, focal point, etc.
Instead of, "Wow, I like it...," how about, "I like it because...."

Do you smell what I'm steppin' in?

Sorry JF,it seemed from your other posts you were coming from the other angle.

Basically I think the problem here is that most of us are into traditional photography and some dable in astrophotography.
I think there are a few on this forum who are very adept at astrophotography but might spend more time on astro forums.....guess what's next.
That's right, check out some astro sights.

Sorry.... not very helpfull..... I apologise. :(

I know what you mean exactly, when I post something I would love a detailed reply positive or negative, but usually get the one liners. On the otherhand when I view other peoples photos I can be just as guilty with the one liners because I don't feel qualified to comment. I could just move on, but feel that at least if I say what I think, then the person is getting some reply and their post moves up the forum again. I never just give two words I will always try and say something postive or negative and if negative give a reason. Your point is good food for thought for when I reply to photo posts in future. Don't let it get you down, you have some great images on your gallery I particularly like the abstract shots - now I suppose I better give a reason :-) well because I like abstract photos but never seem to "see" them for myself when shooting, so I admire the creative eye other photographers process.

I agree with you entirely.
I know a lot of people will hate me for this but I can't stand the response " wow" or such like.
I've made a joke of it once or twice. It tells me nothing.

With the level of male members to this forum, I'm a little disappointed that nude photography isn't winning out...

Okay, maybe I could have left out the "member" part...or maybe that's why moon shots are winning out...

Sorry.... not very helpfull..... I apologise. :(No need to apologise. Astrophotography is great. I'm a big fan of Astronomy Pic of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html). I just used that as an example from my recent memory. I wouldn't want to offend the budding astrophotographers out there, it is serious business-with serious glass.

I know what you mean by "not seeing" it. There are lots of duds that prove I'm no master at it. In the beginning it was hilarious; I took what I thought were cool shots, but now I see some were totally uninspired, and lacked meaning to myself. My feeling is that if it lacks meaning for the artist, then the viewer really isn't going to get anything out of it.
