Well, I got my camera back yesterday and my new lens a Hoya HMC UV filter came in also. Today I went around the yard and snapped a few shots off. I love it! I'm no pro though. This is quite a heavy lens but here are some shots.

Ouch ... that's a nice lens. I had a whole debate about whether to get this one or my Tamron and only decided at the end of the day on the Tamron so I could then have one each of the big four: Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina.
Couldn't decide any other way as the strengths and weaknesses are so well balanced between the two.
Nice choice ...

I tried and tried and tried to find the Tamron. Then I saw www.digitalfotoclub.com had it for $371.XX shipped (7-9 day shipping that came in 2 days). I hit the order button and now I'm loving it.

Perhaps a little too paranoid in these post-9/11 days but I'd blur out the license plate if I were you.
As for the pictures, they show well.
Congrats on the new toy!! 8-)

Yes it would. I bought a monopod for this lens, I heard it was heavy.

Nice photos and thats a good looking pup. I have also decided on the same lens and I saw the great price at The Photoclub. Were you pleased with their service?

Hi, very nice pics-crisp!
Can someone explain to me what qualifies a lens as having 'macro' at the end of the name? This does not seem to be a dedicated Macro lens. What does it do different from a tamron 28-75 (which does not say macro) in the name? Thank for you dealing with a newbie.

Good question, I would like to know aswell.
The main difference is the brand, and focal length. I think they're both great lenses.

An article I just read stated that 1/2 size ratio or closer = Macro.. anything else is just "close up"
More commonly though people tend to feel that "true macro" is a 1/1 ratio reproduction. (lifesize)
All Canon dedicated maro primes offer a 1/1 ratio EXCEPT the the 50mm,. which is called a Macro but is a 1/2 ratio.. unless you get the "lifesize" converter, which makes it 1/1
Sigma, and Tamron Macro primes are the same way.
Where to term tends to get totally abused is on zooms.. where the term "macro" just seems to get stuck on every lens made

My 28-75 says it....
Macro might mean that the lens can focus stupidly close. My tamron 28-75 can focus at 75mm on something that's like 3 inches away. Maybe that's why they give it that title?

Macro is normally 1-1 true but 1/2 is ok but it mostly means extreme close up less than 30cm normally, and always at the far end of the zoom, where as a dedicated fixed prime 1-1 zoom has the ability to focus with 1-1 at what ever distance you are at to allow to include the surroundings, why you'd want to do this depends what you're trying to acheive I suppose.

I have a question about the focus. since it doesn't have HSM, how quiet and fast is it compared to a USM lens?

Well you can hear it if you listen for it, but in normal just get on with it attitude and also a Vicar last week asked me to give her a demo as to how noisey it was before she let me take photo during the ceromony said she had heard a lot worse, but in comparison I'd say it's twice as loud, but then the Canon usm's are near silent anyway.

well my 50mm is super loud compared to my USM. i guess this is the only reason i am staying with canons. I will just have to get into the store adn try it out for myself. the pictures might be more then enough for me to over come the noise. I'm sure i'm just being over critical about this, but looking for reasons to stay strictly canon. thanks for the responce.
