sd card in cf card adapter in our cameras

how would or do these perform? the price on sd cards is so much cheaper i dont understand why more people are not doing this. im curious how many of us are doing it. and how the performance is when we do?

I've been using one in my 40D since I upgraded from XSI. It's great because the media is fast and cheap. It's also smaller and easier to carry around. I also have a transcend 8Gb. CF card and I think SD card w/ adapter out performs the native CF.

I'd like to know also. My wife works at the zoo in the department that handles lost and found. She's always bringing home unclaimed lost SD cards, but never CF cards. I usually give them away, but this would would enable me to use them instead.

You really don't need it for Series 1 cameras. They are all dual Cf and SD capable.

you can pick up a CLASS 10 SD card from frys for around $34. buy a cheap sd card reader from dealxtreme and you probably have almost an instant transfer speed.

you know.... that sounds like a good idea...

I'd buy cheap CF cards before i did that. CF cards are cheap enough these days.

both of my cameras take CF and SD cards. i only use one slot and it's CF, and i only buy the best cards....sandisk extreme IIIs and IV's. this is one area that i just don't experiment.

sandisk always has specials going for its cards i have all i need now :D.

essentially you are achieving the same thing, though you might encounter a slightly slower response time in writing images. I wonder what the actual write speed is on the adapter in regards to using the latest class 10 sdhc cards.

the speed of the fastest cf card will always be faster than the speed of the fastest sd card. but i think cf cards are at the point right now where picking up a few 4gb x3s arent even that expensive. unless u have one of those built in sd card readers in ur laptop and u feel its more convenient to have sd cards, i say go for it and try it out.

"Bought it together with a 16GB AData. Made sure to format card in card reader, not in the camera. Works flawlessly. Is a bit slow:

For 4 shots taken with a Canon 5D in RAW+Large_JPEG.

SANDISK EXTREME IV 4GB - 9 Seconds
SANDISK EXTREME II 2GB - 12 Seconds
ADATA 16GB - 14 Seconds
Adapter + ADATA 16GB SD - 18 Seconds

Note that in my card readed, the Sandisk IV and the AData SD are tied for write speed at ca. 10MB/sec. So, it is most likely the adapter slowing it down. In the adapter, on the computer, the AData writes at 3.9MB/sec, which coincides with the time taken by the 5D, as 4 photographs at 20MB a piece ~= 80MB. At 4MB/sec, that is ~20seconds, which is the observed time to record 4 shots on the 5D.

So, in summary, good for travel (Better to have a slightly slower card that my Laptop and PDA can read w/out any external accessories, than to have a faster card).

Basically, for the money, the adapter is great, UNLESS you do weddings or sports professionally, and routinely max out the buffer on your camera, then it is not for you."

The sdhc card tested was a class 6.

essentially the issue is this: if the adapter does not slow the write speed down, this would inevitably make using sdhc cards cheaper and more cost efficient than having to buy a Sandisk IV CF card which is priced significantly more than it's sdhc counterpart. In addition to this, you would also save on purchasing a fast CF reader which can cost anywhere from $49- $100 depending on the brand.

a 150x sd card reader can be had for $7 at dealxtreme.com (i own one of these and it transfers 8.0 megapixel files from my canon s5 leaps and bounds faster than my sandisk SDDR-92 CF card reader with a sandisk extreme III 8gb CF card. The only caveat to this is that the CF files are 12.8 megapixels in RAW format vs jpeg on the sdhc cards.

Unknowingly, I had some issues with the SD adapters. Only really found out today. My laptops have SD/HC slots so I fitted all my cameras with SD cards, either natively as in the 1D series, and in on I have two SD cards, one via adapter.
