So last week was a bit of a weird one for me, hot on the heels of the Grinspoon gig I decided to try my luck and somehow get into Paul Dempsey's Triple J invite only gig up here, after talking to their marketing manager I was in luck as they were happy for me to cover the event for one of the music websites I shoot for now and then even though they obviously already had a photog hooked up for themselves.

Fast forward to the next day, my girlfriend comes into the office and goes 'Aren't you shooting Jamie T tonight?' Ah damn, she was right, I thought it was the week after so I double booked myself for the first and hopefully last time. I was a bit disappointed as I was really looking forward to Dempsey but Jamie T was always going to be an awesome 'second price'.

The venue this time unfortunately had no photography pit at all, they did a couple of days before at Grinspoon, so I was happy to have my 70-200 f/2.8L IS in tow, it was the only lens I shot with that night as 24-70 as well as the 50mm were nowhere near long enough unfortunately :-( I struggled most of the night and was not happy with my effort as I walked out the door, might have to do with the fact I was coming down with the flue and pretty much spent the next few days in bed lol.

Either way sorry to ramble on, it's a bad habbit of mine, here are some shots, I'd really appreciate some c&c as per usual.

Some nice moments.
Some overexposed / clipping faces.

i find even when there is no pit, it's worth making the trek to the front to get close shots. if you are having difficulty getting down there, ask punters on the way if you can take their pic, then politely ask if you can slide past them to get to the stage. when you get there, there is inevitably fans camped out right at the barrier that will be reluctant to give up their spot. spend some time chatting to them, take their pics and then politely ask if you can take their spot for the first song or two. tell them you have a job to do and that you will be out of their way after the 2nd song. most of the time i find punters happy with this, but be super careful to give the spot back to the right person you took it from! don't just back up and leave, someone else will scope the spot and that fan who possibly staked their spot for hours, lost it completely to some dick photog who didn't offer it back!

^Yep I hear ya, and I actually took some of your advice on this gig as well, I did ask politely to come through and found that most people were happy to let you come through knowing you are doing a job. Something I will do more in future also, on that night though I was not up for it, I was sick with the flue for a week after and just couldn't handle the craziness at the front hehe.
