I have always liked blooms and roses especially...
ROSES 101:
I have now planted my own bush, "Rosie", a Double Delight (i think), and started caring for her as per rosarian info on the web. There's lots of rose sites and comps. Boils down to good sun, good water, good dirt = good growth.

Here is my first bud - I was away on Wednesday when it first unwrapped... any rosarians know how long now til it really opens up? When it does I'll post it here.

10D, 50mm NF (nifty fifty), "L cheapo'.

Looks like its going to be a beautiful colour Carzee! I had a friend who was very jealous of my rose bush. It was huge, about 6 foot high, lush and green, and would produce about 30 buds at a time, that would open up to perfection. It grew in beach sand and I pruned it with a chainsaw lol. Lots of water tho! She spent hours tending to her rose bushes that produced next to nothing.

"Rosie" has 2 vertical stem thingies, about 18in high, both with leaves, but so far only 1 flower bud. There's a long way to go 'til she puts out as much as yours. 6ft!

BTW, I've got to get some good quality horsesh**.

Hmmm I never fertilized it ever! Lol But you can always have a look on ebay, you just never know what you can find there. All I know is, the more I hacked at it with the chainsaw, the bigger and quicker it grew!

Double delights are one of my all time favourite roses..They look stunning and are so perfumed!
The buds open rather quickly, a day or 2 usually, then you only have a day or 2 to photograph while the flower still looks fresh!

The main thing roses need is sun and plenty of it..The are also gross feeders, due to flowering.

Skade, I have about 30 types of roses and while I do get stunning roses, it's always a battle..I have a shady block and that's my biggest battle :(.......My mum has roses and they are totally neglected, they all grow to 6-8 feet tall and are often covered in roses..I laughed at you chainsaw pruning, that's something my mum and stepdad would do but the bushes all come back better!...Makes me spew sometimes!

eBay... I did a search and... firstly here's today's rose action - it really is looking promising - a great buy for the $5

Pic 1. Opened up a bit more this morning. 50mm NF F4 1/500 ISO400
Pic 2. Opened much further by afternoon's end. 50mm NF F2 1/2000 ISO400

In the afternoon I used a bit of water mist and a reflector to get some catch light under neath the bloom. Said reflector was a bit of a treasure hunt. A real pro, with an eye on time & efficiency, asks his assistant if she has any hand mirrors or other shiny stuff. Pointed me to the foil covered cake board - 15 x15in. [ Homer ] Mmmm birthday cake... :D

What a lovely rose Carzee. Is it scented (hope so, it'll cover up the smell of the horsesh**!)

Its definitely nicely scented.
Regarding the photos. The second one has that annoying bad bokeh. And both are a bit soft focus. I wasn't that close, I cropped the pics a heap. Maybe I should focus test my legendary 50 NF. Or maybe not. Roanjohn gave it to me for nix. He mentioned he had broken it - it was in bits but went back together well enough... it'll have to do for now.

Had to work Sunday - but got home 3pm and went straight to Rosie to get the latest...

Rosie has opened up a lot and the scent is wonderful. Used the same basic gear as before (including reflector) -- capturing this one, the first one, for the archive.

EOS skill level improving as you can see! Played with compensations. This one is -2, ISO100, f4, 1/800.

This lil rose is so nice! And its the best flower exercise I've ever done.

Thx Sandi. The original crop is about 1000x1500. There was a slice of sun on the bloom itself, not the stem. It was over-exposing using anything other than centre focus, hence the crop. Tripod was weighted using a bucket of water.

Tomorrow Rosie maybe fully in bloom. I suppose in a few days I will pick this bloom for a vase.

This morning it has opened more. Reviewing the last pic from yesterday afternoon, I decided to soften the sunlight using a nylon screen in order to get rid of the hard line of light on the left side of the bloom.
Used the reflector again etc, and the same settings. Pleased with the more even lighting result.
This a 100% crop.

Thx for the encouragement Joe.

I can see why they might name this variety a Double Delight... but looking at it more creatively, what it looks like.. maybe Rosie is just a Yellow rose that got a load of lipstick stains last night from the fairies at the bottom of the garden?

Carzee, I'm not sure it's a Double Delight; they are red interior and white exterior bi-colored petals, heavily scented, and not an easy rosebush to grow. Yours looks more like French Perfume, which is yellow with red/pink edges. I could be completely wrong...my Double Delight hated me and promptly died upon planting. However, my other roses are making up for the loss...this thread reminds me I should probably take some shots of my 6 bushes, and see what I can see.

And Skade, I have a bush which grows about 8 feet tall, and the gardeners "prune" it with a chainsaw, too. It loves that...grows faster, stronger, and gives bigger blooms. I call it my Tequila Sunrise bush, because it reminds me of a tequila sunrise drink...but it's real name is Heart of Gold.

Regardless, your shot is gorgeous, and I appreciate you sharing it.

Best-
Noni

I've had several Rose Gardens before, Have just started a new one, cant wait for the blooms, I'll tell you a secret thats worked for mine over the yrs. Miracle Gro. it is simply awesome for Roses. I had a Mr. Lincoln(Hybrid Tea) that grew a stalk 8ft tall. the bloom was the size of a large grapefruit. it was simply unbelievable. looking forward to having more like that.:)
