Yeah I love it. The dog waits patiently, like this is probably a weekend routine for them. The guy is not overloaded with stuff, just the bare essentials for a great morning (I'm thinking dawn rather than dusk). Also that mess of foot and pawprints around the dog. The two were probably playing wildly before he set up his poles. If I had to give any critique at all, I would say I wish the fisherman wasn't behind that other pole, but other than that minor detail great shot.

I think the chair and associated boxes would have looked better right in the bottom right corner. Where they are it is a little distracting. Also the rod in the sand going upwards overlaps with too much of the image including the person fishing in the sea. In fact, having that rod completely out of the pic would have been better, but I aprreciate it probably wasn't your gear! :)

Positioning of the lone rod is poor, I agree. However, I think it should not be removed as it is part of the story. It makes me wonder where the person is who goes with that rod. Is it the rod of an old buddy who passed away? A wife? A son who grew up and moved away? The picture tells a story of loneliness. Even the dog is on the beach looking from a distance, yet attentive.

Thanks all! It never occurred to me to try getting rid of the extra rod... perhaps I'll tinker a bit when I get home from work :)

Here's the pic without the poles... what do you think? I did this to the low res pic, btw, so might be a bit rough.

I think it's much better without the poles. This has a very calming feel. Almost poster-esque. I like it :)

I think it might be even more interesting without the fisherman in it: just the stuff on the beach and the dog staring out to sea, making us wonder what happened to the occupant of the chair and whether or not he'll ever come back.

I think you're getting too abstract for my photo club... they're a pragmatic bunch!!

It certainly does IMO...a man and his dog in a beautiful scene.

Just for the record... it was at sunrise, I used a GND, and the dog is mine. The fisherman is the guy renting next door. My dog is obsessed with fish, that's why he's watching like that. Later, he actually went into the ocean, was under for perhaps 15 seconds (felt like forever, I was getting worried), and came up with a fish! And I have pictures!

Are you sure he's not a seal?

When you do something like taking out the poles which someone pointed out could mean a lot, it's best to never show the original although I guess if you did that, you wouldn't need to post here. :)

Or it was the person taking the photo or they went to pee elsewhere.

Awesome photo BTW

I like the idea of removing the fisherman and having just the dog looking out at the sea... but then having the dog look at the fisherman is good too because that explains the sandtracks. Very happy you removed the extra poles!

Sure does. I like your second pic better. I'd like to see pics of the dog catching the fish.
