What is the best remote to get for my rebel? I am a little confused about the different features. Your input would be greatly appreciated.:)
Thanks,

You basically have the choice between the 60T3, the RS-60E3 (both with wires) and the RC1 and RC5 (both wireless).
The difference between the models (apart from wires/wireless) resides in whether you get the shutter lag option or not.
I found the wireless remote useless as the wireless port is situated in the front of the camera (good if you want to include yourself in a group image but not for tripod wildlife pics).
I finally chose the RS-60E3 (which does not have the shutter lag option). It works great.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input but what about that 2 foot cord, how do you get any wildlife shots from 2 feet. Is there an extension for this?

Unless you are trying to get the wildlife to take the picture of themselves why would you need a longer cord? I think the idea is that you stand next to your camera when you take the picture :).
Another option that I am still investigating is using universal IR remotes to control the camera. There are some sites around describing the codes you need, but I have had no luck - yet - but I haven't tried very hard. Seems like a $5-$10 remote is a cheap way to try it out, but, then again, not if you can't make it work.

I don't know if your interested but here is a link on how to make your own remote (it has probably been posted here before):

I also have the palm file for omni remote to use your palm device (with omniremote) to control your 300d. Email me and I will send it to you.

Hi Queenbee -
Like Poco I am not sure to understand your question on the length of the cord for wildlife shots. You will stand next to the camera so a 2 feet cord works great. I do not think there is any extension available but I don't know.
The self made IR remote seems a great idea too.

I have the RC-1 and the RC-60E3 both. I recomend the RC-60E3. With the RC-1 you have to set the self timer inorder to use it, and that will only stay set for 4 minutes I believe. The 2 ft. cord should be fine for you. I have not used either for wildlife. The RC-1 is nice for any self portraits or group portrait you want to be in. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Thanks for all the input. I ended up ordering the rc-5 from b&H. I went with wireless because I want to set camera up at my hummingbird feeder and fire it from a distance. Does that make more sense?
Thanks,
Char

I take that back. It is the RC-1 I ordered. Should arrive tomorrow.

Ah, the ol... "click with fingers crossed hoping that the image will turn out" routine.
It'll be tough to get the hummingbird frozen with a quick shutter speed while keeping the aperture small enough to keep a descent DOF... and making sure the DOF is centered on the bird itself.
Good luck, make sure to post some pics!

Thanks for the input. I am a newbie and I guess the question was confusing. The remote arrived today and yes I am disapointed. I guess I thougt I would be able to focus on the feeder for the hummingbird set it and then just wait from a safe distance. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I was sure that I had read a post where someone did this and got some great pics of some squirrels. oh well. Learning as I go. It is hard sometimes to figure it out if you don't know the right questions to ask. Thanks again.

Use manual focus and focus where the humming birds feed (front of the plastic flower) then take the shot when they're hovering in the zone. If you're used to 1-in-10 shots being good, don't expect the same. The good thing with humming bird feeders is there's only a couple spots where they can be.
I think the key is manual focus.

Thanks RAitch. I will try the manual focus for this shot.

I am looking for a remote for my 300D. I am leaning towards RS-60E3 - the wired release cable. My question is, does it behave like the shutter button on the camera, i.e. half press to autofocus, press all the way down to snap? Thanks in advance.

Works exactly the same.

Another question about the RS-60E3...
I want to get one to use when photographing fireworks for the 4th. From what I've found about it, it can be used with the bulb setting. Does it work the same way? Does the shutter stay open as long as I hold down the remote button?
I'm new to all this equipment so any help you can give will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, the RS-60ES will hold the shutter open as long as it is held down on bulb setting. It also has a slide cover that will keep the shutter button down without having to hold it.

I used mine with my Elan a few years back to capture fireworks and it worked great. It's definately the remote that you want to get.
