Im taking off tomorrow night, i have packed, and the un pack my camera gear. Then i packed it back up after changing my mind, but then i took it out again...

Its taken me a while to get my kit, last thing i need right now is for it to be stolen/damaged!

I have taken it out again, as my bank sent me a letter to say they could not insure my kit outside of the UK

HELP...!

That's the chance we are going to have to take.

Do we want those shots or not?

Are we willing to lug all that equipment around?

Are we willing to take the risk of getting that stuff damaged or stolen?

Are we willing to rent the equipment and hope nothing happens such that we'd have to fork out a ton of cash?

Are the shots we get worth it?

Hence, I decided just to buy cheap/used equipment so if something happens, at least the shots were worth it.

I bring gear appropriate to the bulk of my activity. If I expect to be a beach lizard soaking up sun much of the time, and P&S is suitable. Where a dLSR outfit is more of a burden (like on a trip to an amusment park like Disney World) the P&S is suitable. If I am travelling 'tourist style' thru a new country/state/city, a small dSLR outfit is appropriate; for a 'photo expedition' a full dSLR outfit is most appropriate.

For me, taking photos of new locations IS the vacation. I would no more leave my camera at home than I would leave my toothbrush.

You bought the camera to take photos... use it!

At first I thought this would be about leaving work behind.

You bought a camera to take pics and holidays is where the most beautiful pics are. Bring it. Maybe you also want to use plastic bags so you don't damage tour luggage?

There have been times where I wish I would have just brought a compact, but no way I would go camera-less on a vacation. At the very least buy a 5 pack of disposable film compacts at the grocery store.

I do agree with the others. What good is owning the gear if you are afraid to use it.

When I travel I don't take all the lit. Usually I'll take my 20D and 24-105 and that works for 90% of the time. I also bought a small backpack that I can lug around easily and it never goes into checked luggae if I am flying. Good luck.

Are you a photographer?

that is always my rationale for lugging all my stuff around. sort of a self-induced guilt-trip.

Thanks for your replys, Im off to Tenerife for 11 days!

My bank has now insured my kit!

I Insured my L Lens on another policy, as it is over £500

Im packing light:

Body - 70-200mm - 18-55mm and flash - bag

Should be good, i was not going to take it with out insurence, that worried me

Yes i do use my kit, but im not going to bash it around if i dont have too just for the hell of it :D

Happy Now

A lot of the reason I stopped being a pro photoguy 20 years ago (and did design work), was that I found that after shooting all day, I was less interested in shooting for myself. I opted to shoot for myself again and phased out 90% of those jobs (except Hawaii in the winter, etc.!). So I can see a point to not bringing much or any gear...

However, after a lot of trips to Guangzhou with 1Ds's and big lenses, one trip I took later with only a pocket Leica. I felt naked, but not that I remember missing any great shots, but I was missing a part of me.

When I got back, I sold the 1DsI and bought a 5D. So much easier to take everyday, everywhere, even if I just bring 1 or 2 small primes. Then I added a grip and I'm almost back to the 1Ds bulk... but I still bring a REAL camera everywhere now.
