View Full Version : It's tilted so it's art...

Has anyone else noticed a resurgence of the "it's angled so it's art" school of phototgraphy? It is especially prevalent in automotive photography.

There are shots that work tilted 35 degrees one way or the other but I see a lot of shots that people tilt, twist or spin to try and make them interesting in a forlorn hope of making a so-so picture a keeper.

I am the king of the so-so picture and can spot them a mile away, even tilted (usually I just look for my copyright... :p )

One of the first skills I mastered in Photoshop was leveling horizons.

I don't mind the tilted photos if there's a visual component to the image that makes it interesting. I'm not too keen on crooked for crooked's sake.

Diagonals and triangles are classic features of good composition. They draw interest and direct the eye. They are not usually achieved by meaningless "tilting."

You know what I can't stand? They chic "let's crop the model and cut of the top 1.5" of her head" style de-jour. That drives me MURDEROUSLY insane. It makes me want to go home and put on a ski mask and load a tazer in my bag and go wait for the guy outsideh is office as I pretend to be a college student playing my guitar all the while having the tazer in the left hand so that when he gets close enough I can taze him and drag him back the alley here I have my car parked and toss him into the trunk before driving out to the malland stripping him but naked and spray painting "I take crappy photos for a living and make more money than people with real talent because my mom knew someone that got me the job where I met my super hot wife and whose daddy bankrolled my studio and that is how I get all these super cushy jobs and have affairs with hot young french women."

Ok I feel better now.

At our recent club evaluation, the evaluator, who is a professional photographer spent a lot of time talking about getting the horizon and vertical lines straight! I am not crazy about tilted photos. (even though I sometimes slip and do it my self by accident :) :)

I feel the same way about "it's black and white so it's art" ... or ... "it's an image of a poor or homeless person so it's art" ... or worse yet ... "it's a black and white image of a poor or homeless person so it's really art" ... no matter the snapshot quality of the image in question.

I'm kinda allergic to those "Extreme close-up until you can see the bee's nose hair - is an art".

Maybe it's time to get back to my roots & take pics of squinting kids with the sun in their eyes while they stand woodenly in the middle-distance of a playground? ;-)

Art's so subjective it's almost pointless trying to argue over what is and isn't art.

Much like music really

Country music i think comes from satans own behind, but my dad thinks is the greatest form of expression ever.

My .02...

B&W pictures of something that is striking mainly because of its color... like flowers, birds, theatre...

Makes me wanna gag.
