Notice: Canon lens, flash and accessories price increase coming.

Among other sources of this rumor, Berger Bros (reputable camera retailer) reportedly sent the following email to their customers:

"Effective October 1st, Canon will be implementing a price increase of approximately 10% on many products, including lenses, flashes, and accessories."

Come on Canon, what's going on here?

My thoughts - Canon is destroying the competition, did the math, and figured they wouldn't lose sales from increasing prices 10%.

Wow, and read the announcement just above it...no Canon USA at PMA 2010.

I'm so glad I bought my gear when I did, before the last price hike/rebate.

I feel bad for those just getting into photography.

I've been a satisfied Canon customer since 1990.

Is Nikon increasing their prices too? I wonder if maybe those just starting out might be better off buying Nikon?

Nikon is STILL more expensive, even with Canon slapping on a new 10% Canon Tax.

Not if you look at the latest lenses Canon released. They are right in line with the expensive Nikon glass.

Are Canon and Nikon working together to set (high) prices? Isn't that illegal or just plain mean??

Yep, I posted something on this yesterday. It's a big reason why I ordered my 24-70L recently. I figure at least this way I know what I'm going to pay... instead of waiting for possible rebates to give me back ~6-8% of a 10% hike in price. The only upside is that if you're selling used gear, you can get more out of it.

ITS CALLED THE ECONOMY!

Someone stated this in a thread

Last year, around September, the Yen was 120 yen per dollar, Canon releases a new camera it sells at 300,000 yen and makes a 50,000 yen profit on, and then retails that camera for $2700, just to be safe [since thats 324,000 yen]

Flash foreward to now...As of right now that same $2700 is only worth 242,817 yen....Thats a loss of a little over 7,000 yen on each camera...The Yen is now worth about 89 to a dollar...

So if canon upped the prices on the body 10%, to be even, lets make it 3000, itd be 269,814 yen...Not as good as they were doing before, But its an increase thats likely swallowable to the customer base while simultaneously restoring a profit margin...Not assuming that costs may have decreased slightly because of ramped up production...

In other words, While this does sort of suck, it could also be seen as it could be a lot worse, Canon could jack things up by 20% or so, Canon is likely, Even after the 10% increase not making as much as they did before...

Actually, prices actually went DOWN!
Well... for me at least. Yen was under 90 to the US$ today so that makes using a Yen denominated card with B&H a bit of a bargain. So Kenji is right - it depends on where you are. It is cheaper for me to buy from B&H, with shipping, than to buy it here in Japan where I live. Weird..... but good.
Cheers,
John

Watch the Yen.

If the Yen strengthens against the Dollar, the higher the prices will be here in America.

That's why Canon has been jacking prices up for their stuff... its the strengthening Yen! They have to or lose money.

Canon isn't the one to blame, the ones to blame is umm... Americans who want too many services so the government borrows too much $, prints too much $, making the dollar worthless....

They're doing it so the UK price don't have to be 50% more than USA, were only 40% higher now.

No Canon at PMA, No Apple at Macworld , looks like these companies are looking at where they really get sales from and cutting out the over prices (to them) shows.

Canon Instant Rebates are in effect at the moment, but in some cases, the rebate amount is less than the price increase on the item.

dang that licks big time.... i never realized really as i just started to look for new gear about a week ago and just thought those prices were the norm... wowza.... so if i had been pro-active about getting and looking into new gear a month back i would have saved 10% on flashes and lens... damn that sucks..... thats some serious dough when your looking at L lenses and flashed like the 580 that just got tagged on.

But at the same time can you blame Canon in this economy... the Yen is not helping them at all or the end consumer like us!
