Not sure which part of the coast you're heading to (northern, central, southern). These were taken along what I consider the central coast between Florence and Newport last summer with my old point-n-shoot...

Haceta Head lighthouse...

I forget exactly where, but one of the many lookout points along the central coast...

Tomorrow we're heading to the very southern OR coast and very northern CA coast for the long weekend. I'll try to remember to post any notable areas of the southern coast to check out when I get back.

I think it's hard to go wrong along any part of the OR coast.

I'm partial to the southern coast, probably because I spent my childhood going to the coast between Newport and Seaside (centralish to north).

From about Bandon south to Gold Beach is some stunning and desolate stretches of coastline. Huge beach and virtually no one there (doh, did i say that out loud? I mean HUGE crowds! HUGE! wall to wall RVs!).

The key is to stop at the parks and little turn offs and WALK through some spectacular forest, at times, to the beach. Sometimes the beach is on the highway, sometimes it takes work to get to it. The areas that make you work to get there are worthwhile.

Cannon Beach is almost cliche, but i'm a snobby native.. One fun place up there is the wreck of the Peter Iredale and the gun bunkers at Fort Stevens State Park. It's on the most northern tip of the Oregon coastline. Man.. I need to get out there and shoot more. Everything's in my head and not captured.

You can see things like the lighthouses, devil's punchbowl, seaspray at the tidewall in Depoe Bay at high tide, whales likely, bald eagles off cape lookout, Pacific City, monoliths just a tease of a length off the shore, spectacular views from high elevations (hikes), tidepools, happy people.

Thanks KenE, Sparker, and slacker! I am going to take a couple of days just to slowly drive down the coast. The pics are great and I appreciate the input. Any other comments from others would be appreciated.

When you get to OR swing by a local newstand or store. If it's still on the stands, the May/June edition of "Oregon Coast" magazine goes into a little detail about places along the entire coastline...

You sir, are a regular Chamber of Commerce... and for my money you got it all right. I could spend weeks just making the trip from CA to WA along the OR coast. Beautiful country.

Is there a particular place where you are more likely to see a whale or seals?

Seal Cove is just south of Heceta Head, as I recall. Lots of seals along that stretch. Whales are uncommon in the summer, I'm told, and usually stay offshore. That said, we saw a few of them in July, but they were pretty far out.

My earlier post (ie, Cannon Beach) was simply giving in to temptation to make a pun (Canon Beach, get it?). It's a nice spot with huge boulders in the surf, great spot for a sunset. Almost anywhere along the coast is good.

Austin, if you're near Newport, be sure to stop at Depoe Bay. Very picturesque.

Thanks again for all the input. I've already looked at the map and planned several stops because of the advice. I'll post a couple of pics when I get back. BTW...love the pun!

I keep thinking of more spots to recommend, such as Shore Acres State Park (if you like gardens). And, Sunset Bay (near the town of Coos Bay). Two lighthouses near Newport, Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head. When I said "Seal Cove", I was thinking of Sea Lion Caves, but there are sels on the dock in Newport and along the coast in many places, such as Whale Cove. You can also find waterfalls by going inland a ways, if that appeals to you.
