those who have this lens and still own or used to own 17-85, aside from 2mm at wide angle, how much better is this? I used to own 17-85 and remember it being a fantastic lens, which you can have these days used for less than 1/2 of the price of 15-85, thinking whether to repurchase 17-85 or save/sell to get to 15-85.
save and get the 15-85. its a bit faster on the wide end (i think the 17-85 is only F4 vs F3.5 for the 15-85) and the build quality is much better. i love my copies (i have 2) and enjoy taking all around pics with it.

I think this lens does pretty good in low light. It also depends what you are trying to shoot. Since i've had this lens I have only taken a handfull of low light shots with it and the one of my son was the most difficult. It was the best looking one of him IQ wise of about 10 shots. The other ones were fairly easier to capture since the subject was not a constantly moving 10 month old! lol. All 3 of these pics are straight out of the camera, no PP done just to show you its potential. All were shot handheld. I know the last 2 are a little dark...

And to answer the question about the autofocus speed, it seems fairly quick to me. But im still pretty new in the photography world and have not had the opportunity to try out many other lenses, including the 17-55. Compared to the Tamron 17-50, the 15-85 does seem to be a little better. The Tamron seems to search alot more.

Thanks. I am looking at this lens and the new Sigma 17-70 HSM OS 2.8-4.0 which is getting very good reviews and at least in one review fares better than Canon 15-85 at wide end but loses in tele end. http://www.lenstip.com./223.4-Lens_review-Sigma_17-70_mm_f_2.8-4.0_DC_Macro_OS_HSM_Image_resolution.html
I have the Sigma 17-70 old version in Nikon mount and it is superb and focuses instantly in low light. Sigma is also significantly cheaper than the 15-85. So I am doing my research now. Thank you for posting your results!

No problem! Yeah, the price tag on the 15-85 was a little hard for me to swallow, but for "seemingly" better overall results in IQ, which is what I was looking for, it was worth the purchase for me. I did alot of research and read alot of reviews before buying this lens and I havent looked back yet.

Hello New to the forum and just taken the step up from compact camera to a DSLR. Had the 550D for a day or two but then held the 7D in my hand and just new I had to have it….
Ended up with the kit with the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. I have on order the EF 35mm f/2 for the purpose of indoor photography without flash
After reading trough the various forums here I wonder if I have made the right decision regarding to optics. I see that the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM is a “reference” lens that can be used both indoor and outdor. The lens sample pictures tread for it shows samples that have a kind of magic to it that I don’t feel that the sample treads for the two other lenses have to the same degree. This can of course be because of that there are many more that owns the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM than the two other leses.
I need one “walk around” lens that is going to be on the 7D until I can afford a good tele zoom or something else nice. The use for the lens is 50/50 indoor outdoor. Indoor preferably without a flash. I mostly take pictures of people but also some nature photography.
I’m in the position that I can get a full refund for both the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and EF 35mm f/2 and for the money buy a EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS instead.
What are your recommendations? Anyone had the lenses and compared? Should I exchange or should I keep the lenses I have?
Pleas give some of your thoughts to a newbee on the forum!

Hmm...way are these pics so blurry? Is this due to lens or photographer? They don't look any better than my 18-55mm IS in terms of sharpness and contrast. And also, it looks like that this lens doesn't have L colors like 17-55IS.

If it were me I'd keep what you have and give them a go for a bit. The 15-85 is a very capable lens and will serve you well. Image quality is great. I don't know much about the 35 f/2 but I've read that it's an ok lens. The nice thing about lenses is they hold their resale value if you take care of them. if you're not happy with either lens after trying them out you can sell them here without any problems. I've sold numerous lenses here successfully and used the money to fund other lenses. Good luck and enjoy your new setup. Let's see some pics from that 15-85 when you have 'em. :D

I think you will appreciate the focal range of the 15-85 and see it as a plus over the 17-55mm. The extra 30mm at the long end is handy in nature shots. Your 35mm seems a great choice for indoor. I suggest - don't look back!

I shot some birds directly above me with a blue sky and saw - I think its called light fall-off in the corners.
Cropping it out is no issue of course, but try for yourself shooting a blue sky and note the corners. I'm not complaining, I know its common in likely the majority of lenses, and I imagine had I shot at f/8 instead of f/5.6 it 'may' have helped.
I hope Canon updates the 50D firmware to include the 15-85mm lens to correct the fall-off issue as it has for all but the most recent.
Does DPP recognize lens issues and apply correction? I think if I recall it does, and addresses the 15mm barrel distortion and other issues. ... I think.
anyways, not birds, but here are a few from less than a week ago. 24 & 15mm (15mm showing its barrel distortion, I don't use DPP...if I shoot @15mm - guess I should )

Yes, that is a nice table top redition or its abilities. Remember, it is not macro lens by nature. Most people want this lens as a "walk around" since it has 3 extra mm on the wide side and about 25mm on the tele side than a typical kit starter lens. It does its best work as a hard working "keep me on the camera" lens. When I was at the Phipps Flower Show it did 100% of the work with really impressive sharpness and flexibility. See my Flickr for lens ability ideas.

I dunno, I'm really not a high end hobbyist, more of a music enthusiast. But I would suspect that even a small dedicated amp can drive the headphones. I suggest you head to head-fi.org (heh), for more educated answers.

Did you guys get a manual with your lens? My lens was added to a "50D + 18-200mm Kit (substituted).
My 70-300mm had a manual, so I wondered if there was no room in the Kit box to include it.
I went to the Canon.com 15-85mm page but no manual listed.

Wow lazer-jock! That is exactly correct! And in order! I took these pics on a mountain ridge on a very windy day. There was only a handfull of useable shots taken that day due to the extreme movement! Maybe the reason for the busy bokeh? I actually had a buddy of mine blocking the wind! But thanks combatmedic870 for the comments! I love this lens and i believe you would too!

How low was the light? Not really sure what you mean. I had one Alien Bee AB800 strobe to the left of me and a 430EX Speedlight to the right. Model was about 8 feet from the fence behind. Easy mate, it's an honest mistake to make. 15-85 looks v similar to 18-55 if you're a little inattentive or have problems with number recognition.
The Exif issue is tricky as many people use PS's "save for web" command to resize and compress images and it unfortunately has the side effect of stripping the Exif data.

Thank you for the recommendation! I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to SLR photography (although I've experience with manual control point and shoots) and even more of a newbie when it comes to PP. Does that book cover general purpose PP for many different conditions and moods? And does that book favor a certain program (like Photoshop, Lightroom, etc)? I need to get a good go-to book on PP (much like how many people recommend Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure as the go-to book for SLR beginners).

Thanks for your cc, I think f11 or f16 maybe (try to avoid the smaller aperture to make this whole pic not so sharpness, this point you can check it out in photozone site for more detail about MTF chart -> the best MTF of this lens is f8, so with ND8, the picture will be better :D), and I used tripod only, not ND filter or CPL.

did you just put an IR filter over the lens on an unmodified camera or was your camera converted as well? these look really good.

Wow! I'm really amazed what this lens can do!
@radiansyahyamin:
Your B+W photos just took my breath away.
@ Acamacho:
Your IR photos just showed another way to play with this lens, very inspirational!
@ Arrqh:
Thanks for mentioning about getting a polarizer filter, the photos looks much more clear and vivid!
Thanks you all for shooting such great pictures, I haven't look through all the pages, but I've decided to get this lens ASAP!

Golly, I'm thinking of selling my Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 18-55mm, and 55-250mm for this lens. Should I do it?

...just keep in mind that the tele reach is EF-S, and not EF.
I love it for wide landscapes and general walk-around with excellent IQ but the reach is limited and therefore rules out birding and much wildlife.
I'm fond of my EF-S 15-85mm & EF 70-300mm 'Dynamic Duo'

Well, you see, the 55-250mm is a touch too short for wildlife any how. I actually find that from 150mm-250mm it doesn't have much practical use. The only thing I would miss is the 10-12mm range, but it isn't the sharpest. 15mm isn't bad though and I could adapt. Oh dear, choices choices...

Went to LV last week took 700 RAW shots with the 15-85 not changing once! It truly is a wonderful walk around lens. Some of my favorites, with about 35 on my flickr.

Pretty nice shots!
Do you find that your 15-85mm can pretty much eliminate the need for your 18-55mm and 55-250mm?

Hmmm... I'm really contemplating picking this one up. So those of you that are using filters, which ones do you recommend that really don't vignette? I'd definately want to pick up a slim polarizer.

Wow guys all your pictures with this lens is AWESOME! I have been looking for a good walk around lens and i think i've found it. Need to start saving lol.
I have an xs, would the lens be good on it? probably a little front heavy due to the lens? I just purchased a 55-250mm yesterday because it was on sale for $149 @ frys, do you think i should sell this and just use the money towards this lens? Only reason I'm hesitating to sell or return it back is because of the price I got it at.

I use the lens on an XSi and it feels just fine. Shouldn't be much different than the XS. As for selling the 55-250mm, I'd say keep it. For $149 you got a great lens. I'm sure there will be times you'll need the 250mm. The 15-85mm is on my camera most of the time, but I still need the 55-250mm for plenty. They make a great pair.

Awesome I appreciate your input mountaindog . Looks like i'm keeping it then:) Did you keep your 18-55 as well or did you sell that?
Also petal hood lens for this lens does it rotate when zooming or does it stay in place? I am confused on how petal lens hood stay on the lens and whether it spins or not.
