Yeap, this thread is for sample shots of the 15-85 only :D

Thanks for your compliment! Even while shooting these pics I was still wrestling in my mind whether I should've gotten the 17-55, but the more I look at the results, the more I like the lens. I think I'm keeping it :p

The range is perfect, which is why I am contemplating getting one. Do you find the 5.6 limiting? I am trying to consolidate my 10-22 and 24-105 into a one lens walkaround solution. This seems like the best idea, as the 17-55 is too short, and not quite wide enough.

Oh and I also really like the above pics!

My initial thoughts on this lens are impressive. 100% crops on my 7d look fantastic, may be the best I've seen thus far. I see no CA of PF wide open, and only a little Vignetting. I'm still on the fence about the 5.6, it is limiting indoors with no flash. I'm headed off to the ocean to try it out there. Will post comparison test on Sunday.

I dont know, i know that its better than the old one...i looked at a 17-70 before buying this and i decided against it because of lack of IS and the fact the wide end was very soft..

The new one is faster now as well as incorporating OS...I'm skeptical about quality wide open because of this...

Not going to immediately judge it a bad lens, nor am i going to say that the 15-85 is definitively better than it yet...

Realizing due to the IS this lens will possibly increase my keeper rate do you folks think the added cost of this 15-85mm will produce that much better IQ & sharpness versus the Tamron 17-50mm constant f2.8 non-vc for a walkaround? The additional length is no concern to me since i have the 85mm f1.8 prime. Due to the poor reviews filtering in on the Tamron VC version i decided against it.

Fixing to hit the buy button and need some variable opinions from you actual owners. :p

Its $450, so its pretty damn cheap to be honest, if it actually improved the optics over its predecessor it will be one of the best buys out there [Finally, a 17-50 Tamron competetor with range and OS]

But I'm doubtful because it just doesn't seem like they did, I think its like the 17-50 VC...

The 17-40L is a great lens but the 15-85 isnt too bad either, almost designed specifically for the 7D.

The 17-40 is a great lens, but imho, worthless on a crop, without IS or speed its a pretty limited lens with a limited range, You gain nothing except better build quality with it over say the Tamron 17-50, Canon 17-55 or the 15-85..

Anyways, heres some with my 7D + 15-85...Playing with focus tracking and the various focus modes..probubly not the BEST in the world, but im still learning my 7D :)

I am impressed so far with the pics here. The lens seems very sharp. If it was a constant f/4, I would find a way to get it. Even with the varying aperture, I'm tempted to pick it up for a travel lens.

The lens low light capability is good with the 40D and 7D, but what about the Rebel series like the XSi which has ISO that goes up to 1600 only?

I'm assuming that the lens is supposed to have the new 4 stop IS system. To be conservative, I would assume that you could gain 3 stops on average. So just keep in mind the focal length rule for handheld sharpness (also adding the crop factor). So, if you are shooting at say 85mm, you will need a shutter speed over 85X1.6, which would be 1/136. Take three stops from that and that will give you the ability to shoot the subject at around 1/10s with no visual shutter blur as long as it is not moving. You also have to take into consideration the aperture at the corresponding focal length and how much light you will be getting.

I would not recommend going over ISO 800 generally on an XSi for anything larger than a 8X10 print, but that is personal preference. For the same money, you can get a used 17-55 IS which is f/2.8 and has a usable 3 stops of IS. It is the better choice for low-light work IMO, especially if you do indoor shooting. I have got usable shots on mine at around 1 second shutter speed. It's the only lens that I can get reliable shots with indoors without flash and decent ISO's.

if you look up a bit anything i've done with this lens before that last post i made was done with a 30D which has the same sensor

Low-light the 15-85 does work well, but if you're primarily working in low light the 17-55 is honestly a better tool for the job, I've gotten the 15-85 at 85mm down to about 1/6 before [And less if i remember right] handheld however...

Do you guys think this lens + 270EX will give a better night picture than the 17-55mm with the built-in flash? I have the 17-55 right now and not all my low light shots came out nice since I only use the built-in flash and I don't think I would use an external flash with it 'cause its already heavy as it is with the XSi. I have 14 days (7 days left) to return the 17-55 at Adorama and exchange it with the 15-85 and 270EX.

I've shot 20% at f/2.8 and 80% at f/4 - f/5.6 (with built-in flash) with the 17-55 during my time in Vegas if that helps. Maybe I don't need f/2.8 after all?

There's nothing wrong with using a flash instead of an f/2.8 lens. If you don't want subject isolation, I would say that your flash combo might be a good choice for you. You'll get a better zoom range (15-85 vs. 17-55) and the 15-85 IS system seems to be excellent from what I have heard. I NEVER use the built in flash unless I'm outdoors for fill. Try bouncing the light when possible if you end up with a flash. I use a 430EX II, but the smaller flash should work if you don't need the power.

Silverfox1
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 17:50
I have both the 270EX & the 430EX II

The 270EX is great for fill flash outdoors in AV mode + you can vertically bounce it versus any built-in flash. Really convenient and lightweight to carry in your pocket. Works indoors nice too, but i normally use the 430 EX II indoors bounced vertically along with a DIY foam bounce card with the camera in manual and flash in ETTL mode. I just happen to be a proponent of using an external flash when possible bounced regardless of which lens i have on the camera in lower light scenarios.

Thanks 40Driggs and Silverfox1. Would you guys say that the 15-85 is better in low than the IS kit? From the spec, the kit seems to be the faster lens. IQ wise, is it really better than the kit lens, if it is, how so?

msowsun
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 20:10
From the spec, the kit seems to be the faster lens.

15-85 and the 18-55 kit lens are both f/3.5-f/5.6 lenses.

The 18-55 is:

f/3.5 at 18-23mm
f/4.0 at 24-38mm
f/5.0 at 39-46mm
f/5.6 at 47-55mm

The 15-85 is:

f/3.5 at 15-17mm
f/4.0 at 18-26mm
f/4.5 at 27-37mm
f/5.0 at 38-60mm
f/5.6 at 61-85mm

I wouldn't say the kit lens is faster....

As for sharpness, you can compare the two here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0&Lens=675&Camera=474&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=455

I haven't had a chance to do any real shooting with this lens, but the test shots I took right after getting it make me think it's going to be a great walk-around lens. Here's a 100% crop of the angel we had on top of our Christmas tree; it's just over 10% of the original image by pixel dimensions.

It's simple mate, just flash trigger background (a white blank paper) bounce (if you need color, I use Blue gel to cover my flash), f11, 1/250s, focus into "Made in china" words, my 7D in on tripod at 85mm, that's it. The water drop from 1m above the "Made in China", let try several shots so you can get the right picture for you.

Dry humour does not use 'smilies' so does not translate well - it would seem! If you too wondered, like out wet-coast friend, that I was serious, I figured on you looking up the by-law and seeing it was bogus.

Yes you would. But for me personally, I'm not getting rid of my 85/1.8 for anything. Also, I'll most likely be trading my 17-40L for an EF-S 10-22. So I've got lot's of latitude in focal length & versatility. But if you're on a budget the 15-85 will not only make a great walkabout lens, but could certainly take the place of some others as well.

Just got home to find my little treasure sitting on the porch waiting for me. Now if only the sun would come out and give me some color...

Has anyone used this lens to shoot a wedding or is it too slow beyond 50mm?

I would think that it would be hard to pull off an indoor wedding with this lens. Granted, there are times that there is very little motion, so the IS could help there, but an indoor wedding would be pushing it especially since sharpness is highly prized in most wedding photos that I have ever seen (IS does nothing for motion blur).

I have the 30mm Sig. set as my indoor lens. I`m researching for my one outdoor lens.

15-85 seems to fit the bill, but for the price, I can buy 2 prime lens.

Tokina 11-16 (not really prime) + used 85mm prime = 15-85 $$$

Congratulation on the new lens! Now you have to convince me to get it...

Waiting for the pics :-)

Keep your pants on they're coming... Ha!!

Truthfully, there is no good light today at all. I'm not in the mood to go strobist either. I uploaded a bunch of test shots from around the house, and a few outside. It's DISMAL gray outside today. I did however, take shots of my new mailbox. Some young girl graciously plowed it down and did a hit-n-run last week. That little gem set me back $260... so here she is!

Another exciting ISO3200 shot in the garage. HUGE 300W equivalent CFL bulbs for lighting. They suck for photography for sure! But this lens on the 7D looks like a winner to me..

My buddy has an XSi, it's really not bad at all. Granted it's no 7D, but a very capable camera. Heck, I'd like to get a XSi / T1i for a backup as they're priced really good these days.

Just wanted to note the build quality as well (while I'm on a ramble.) This may not be labeled an "L" lens, but it sure feels like it. The zoom is nice and smooth, if not a bit tight. The focus ring is smooth as butter, and overall fit & finish are top notch. This lens is a built in Taiwan and is second to none of my other lenses built in Japan. I'm impressed!

Edit: I really don't want to start anything on the built in Taiwan statement (I certainly don't want to offend anyone.) It's just that a year or so ago I bought a Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens that was built in Taiwan. Brand spank'n new. It was nowhere near the build, or optical quality of this lens. There, I feel better now...

This was from my only "field trip" since I got the lens, to Agecroft Hall in Richmond, Virginia. This is a Tudor country manor originally built in Lancashire, England, in the 15th-16th centuries, part of which was dismantled in the 1920's and transported to the U.S., then re-built.

Hey MackDaddy1962, looks like you have a good copy of this lens, congrats! Are you keeping it? :)

Agreed, one of the best built lenses out there now. I had the 17-85 previously as well.. it's not even in the same league as the 15-85. Hard to believe they're the same brand.

If you've decided to keep it, I recommend you get the lens hood as your next step. Also, a high-quality UV filter (Hoya HD, B+W MRC) won't hurt.

It's a keeper, Zone. I need to get some more shots in over the next few days but from the looks of it now it's going to be as good IQ wise as the 17-40. Plus the fact is has the solid 4 stop IS & better overall focal range will actually make it much more useful. I've already got a 72mm Hoya Pro1 Digital protector on, the OEM canon lens hood should be on my porch by tonight. ;)

It's dark Kenji!

Last time I asked for your advice about the filters for landscape, sorry the Cokin system is sometimes too complicate for me (I have not much time for landscape), GND filter (as BW GND 502 gray...) is only center horizon, can not adjust following some special situations... How about the CPL? Hoya Pro 1D CPL is a good one right? My friends said that it's very useful for daily purpose (water, glass, saturation push up.. blah blah). Am I wrong or forgetting something?

its probubly better than my cruddy tiffen ;) and yes, CPLs are the second most-used filter type..the list is probubly UV, CPL then GND filters these days as all others dont have quite the same need...

And yeh i suppose it was a bit dark, it was early in the morning...

'm not good at PP for landscape, I think adjusting the contrast (level, curve maybe??) will increase the colors a little. Thanks very much for your kind words.
