I know when I shot this I messed up the lighting. could anyone help me fix it? I have tried everything with no luck.

Did you shoot in raw? If so, you should be able to dodge the kid enough to fix this. If you don't know how to do this you can email me the raw and I can show you.
No point in trying to fix this jpeg. It's not going to come out.
Also, it looks out of focus but you didn't ask for help on that and it may just be the compression playing tricks.

Aw.he is adorable.looks like a mini Mike Holmes.....looks pissed at what the other contractor left..lol....

haha, mines the same... only he also points at me when I am taking the picture "accusing" me of something.
Overall, if you have the raw you can use ACR to bump up the overall exposure and some fill light then reduce the brightness a bit to bring it to a good end (might also want to add some more black to help keep things from loosing contrast).

I completely disagree that this can't be fixed as a jpeg. Certainly RAW is always better, but jpeg isn't a hopeless cause in more cases than people seem to think. And also to pacify those who would rather see him smile:

If you're familiar to photoship, please, try a filter called "shadow/highlight". It should help you with the issue.
