A friend has let me use his 5D m11 and 28-300L
Now the big question:) the bands I am shooting will have not too brilliant lighting, and I am no expert. So will this combination work? and I know there are no set settings I can use but a few that may help please.
I have a 450D and a nifty fifty would I be better with this?

Most of the time in concert shooting, f/2.8 barely cuts it but you never know what kind of lighting you may get.

Depending on the lighting you get, you can either stick the nifty fifty on the 5D2 and use that or stick the 28-300L on the 5D2 and crank up the ISO.

Thanks for reply I know its not easy to advice without seeing the lighting.
I think I will use the 28-300 no pressure so I can always swop the lens.
I have only used this camera once to shoot a band outside. I shot on tv shutter speed at 320 because I am tiny and this lens is pretty heavy lol. Got some nice shots but I think it was more luck than anything.

As for settings, I would probably go with AV with your lens wide open (on the nifty fifty start at 2.8 and go wider if you have to), center weighted average or partial metering, center focus point, and ISO as necessary all the way to 6400 on the 5D2 to get a usable shutter speed.

Good luck and hope to see some pics from this.

AV with your lens wide open [...] center weighted average or partial metering,

In that case, be sure to set appropriate EC...

I'd rather use Evaluative with EC. It's likely to be less fooled by backlighting or a band all dressed in black ;)

Id use the 50 on the 5DII, manual, spot metering, obv start at a lower iso and work up as needed and depending on how dark it is 2.8 or even 1.8 if needed.... just watch your focus

i find that spot metering is not very effective unless you are really close and/or can zoom in so you can actually fill the metering circle w/ skin tones. a 50mm on full frame might not get you there, unless you are really close.
