I really, really love this lens. It still amazes me with it's sharpness, bokeh, AF speed and rendering. Something about the way the images look, combined with the fact that I love the 100mm focal length, makes me enjoy this lens more than any other portrait lens I've owned (which includes the 85L and 135L). And, yeah, it's a macro too. :) Here are some quick shots of my daughter playing around last night. All wide open.

how do you mean? Is this lens good at those F stops

Absolutely!

There's a phenomenon that occurs regarding depth of field and focal distance (distance from the object).

Look here:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b7/Depth_of_field_Nov_2008.jpg/425px-Depth_of_field_Nov_2008.jpg

You can see that the chip text is probably only ~1/4" higher than the circuit board it sits on... but even at /5.0 there's hardly any depth of field!

Even /14 shows less than total depth. See that they end up shooting at /32 to capture everything in focus!

Yes this lens is much better (my opinion) than the 60 macro. Don't restrict yourself in thinking its just for macro though. Shoot it around for portraits and closed field of view landscapes. Its phenomenal.

well i actually got it with portraits in mind. I wanted the F2.8 for portraits again in an L. Since I sold the 70-200 F2.8 (non IS) and got the F4IS version, Ive missed it even though I love the F4 and I needed another macro so Ive got two for one here. Saved for ages for it. Very nice

might I ask how much are youse paying for this lens in North America.... I ask because it`s on sale here in this city for just over $1000.00...thats about $200.oo less than last week.
I recently discovered the 70-200 F/4 IS sells for just about double it does in the States so I`m wondering. I really want a macro and have been looking at the Tamron 90mm and 180...the Tokina 90 as well as the Canons. Just can`t make up my mind but if the Canons sell for far less over there I`ll wait.

I've done self-portrait eyeball shots, it's not too hard with a tripod and wireless remote. The hard part is trying to figure out where to stick your eye, it's never centered the first 5 or 6 times you try.

Can someone confirm if i am going crazy or not... I swear my 100L is getting noisier. Now anytime i focus i can hear the IS running for about 2 seconds. I hear the motor start with a little churn noise, then 2 seconds of motor moving, and churn noise as it stops. Anybody else's do this or should i be sending off for a warranty job. As far as i can tell IS is still working fine.

I've got exactly the same issue. Didn't build up to being noisy, just suddenly started. Seems to operate with no problems but I am a bit worried about it. I'm going to contact the retailer to see what they say.

It is, you can even see the window frames reflected in the droplets!

I much prefer the look from natural light, as long I have a tripod and manage to keep the flower from moving - it needs to be secured, not left free to sway on its stem.

The DOF is thin enough even at f13, I would never use 2.8 for macro work. Only for portraits.

I've used F2.8 for macro shots plenty of times. Granted I wouldn't use it for a true 1:1 macro. However, I've learned that using low DOF can really isolated a single part of your subject that is of interest and result in a better shot than if the entire subject is in focus.

I agree. Some good images can be made. This is f2.8 trying (and partly succeeding) to emphasise the unusual shape of the spider's head or the head of the bush cricket eating the flower..

The first one seems to be OOF.

I agree you can use f2.8, but not at close distances, and only if the subject allows. For example in your second shot only the eyes need to be in focus and as they're small you can get away with a shallow DOF. If you're shooting flowers however, the intricate detail with a relatively large depth (eg my second shot above) will need much greater DOF.

I still disagree, flowers can be shot wide open. You simply have to be more selective of what you want to emphasize with the focus. Here are two examples from my own work:

As I said, it depends on your subject. Your first image works (it's hard to judge the second because it looks soft), but 2.8 wouldn't have worked for my shots because the vast majority of the image would have been OOF, and so too many distracting elements.

I didn't say f2.8 can't be used, just that for most of the shots I've taken so far it would have been inappropriate.

It is slightly OOF that's why I said partly succeeding. I'm not sure what you mean by '.... you can use f2.8 .... and only if the subject allows'. I find most camera settings work best if they are tailored to the subject. It's a bit like saying you can use f16 for a landscape only because the subject allows it.

f16 gives you large DOF and that's not the issue here.

In your first shot, the bit of the flower in focus has shallow depth, therefore f2.8 (shallow DOF) is suitable for this particular subject, ie it will give you the DOF you need.

My subject had much greater depth with the complex structure at the centre of the flower, not to mention the long petals which curve towards the camera. So I needed a much greater DOF to get as much as possible in focus. I didn't have a background some way back which could be thrown out of focus, like you have.

That's what I mean by the subject being suitable or unsuitable for a shallow DOF.
