Ed, there is any reason why you didn't use CPL filter? Too boring / flat without the reflex??

Why would I need a CPL?

x_tan

Seem lots reflexion on the cars' suface. I'm not sure if that's current style or not.

Never saw the need for a CPL, probably never will see a need for a CPL. Car and bike shows have reflections, nature of the beast.

See. Shoots from the magazine are very different with the web photos then.

It's coming to be that a lot of car enthusiasts would rather see reflections than not. It's a sign of good paint and good bodywork in a lot of cases. The CPL doesn't hurt it in some cases, and doesn't help it in others.

been looking at this thread for quite a while now and my wife surprised me and bought me this lens! WOO HOO!!! here's my first shot. Needs lots of practice, but will be fun. What do you guys recommend first, ring flash or tenko tubes?

Nice shoot, Erick.

Just use you 580EXII should be ok - Push it all way down, then bring out the white card in the flash. Try and see what happen.

Below shoot I used my 580EX and full set Canon + Kenkon tubes:

Two sets tubes together are 11cm long, so the spider maybe very close to 3:1.

Never saw the need for a CPL, probably never will see a need for a CPL. Car and bike shows have reflections, nature of the beast.

CPL can be used for colour saturation as well as reflection reduction...

I used a CPL here to saturate the sky and frost:

I've been eye balling this lens for the past week and I really liking it. You all use the Kenko/Canon tubes with the lens to get close ups? Most of the pictures on this threat are without the tubes? This will be my first macro lens. Look like a great walk around lens to have on! I'm debating to buy from B&H or wait for the canon refurbished store to get them back in stock. Has there been many bad copies out?

Thinking about upgrading my 60mm macro to this beast. Would love the extra reach. Is the sharpness between the non-L and the L that great?

I'd say the sharpness is about the same actually. The non-L is stoopid sharp. L gives you IS and weather sealing.

Is the IS worth it for macro, or does it become a non-factor?

jwcdds
8th of August 2011 (Mon), 11:37
Well, it's supposed to have that "hybrid" IS that not only corrects up/down/side-to-side movements, but also back-n-forth drifts. So that might help if you're getting close to 1:1. If you can spare the cash, go for the L. If not, the non-L is no slouch.

Awesome, thanks for the insight! I'll probably pick up the L since I've been doing a lot more macro work lately.

They're bolt extractors, for removing bolts with stripped heads. Sometimes called bolt-out's.

Neither did I, went into Calumet with the cash all ready to go. Didn't know if I'd buy it or not but wanted to be prepared just in case. I put the lens on my camera, half-pressed the shutter, and said "I'll take it!". Didn't even have to take a picture, saw how fast the AF was, saw how good it looked in the VF, I was sold.

Made the salesman smile, made me smile, made my wife look at me funny.

I could be wrong but I don't believe the canon TCs work with this lens. I tried! It's unfortunate that they don't.

Why would you need a TC on a Macro lens? Just Curious, it would make a cool zoom but for its macro capabilities I wouldnt throw a tc on it. Get some extension tubes and fire away :)

So you would choose extension tubes over TC? The reason why I'm getting it is because I want longer working distance.

If you want longer working distance. You should be looking at a longer macro instead. 180L perhaps.

$1500 for the 180L or a couple hundred for TCs to go with the 100L, Hmmmm.

Dunno, you yourself said at first that you had tried it and that it didn't work.

With the cost of the 100L @ $900, + your Kenko TC cost... you're just a few bills shy for the 180L. It's not like it's a $1500 difference.

+1, I wear mine every night.
We've extracted teeth#5 & 12 on two different patients that fractured them to the bifurcation due to bruxism.
It was unfortunate as both teeth were untouched but that's what happens when patient's don't follow recommendations.

I use this on my last hike and non macro shots turned out very sharp! People say that lens AF is slow but I have not notice this taking the shots. Do you all think the IQ is similar to the 135L?

KenjiS
26th of August 2011 (Fri), 18:46
If you want longer working distance. You should be looking at a longer macro instead. 180L perhaps.

Or the new Sigma 150mm f/2.8 OS, Which is roughly the same price as the 100L

Gotta admit as much as i love the 100L, i sometimes want more working distance, Especially with insects...

Lobelia niihauensis - hailing from the dry cliffs of O'ahu, Kaua'i, and Ni'ihau.

So from about 30cm assuming the 180mm macro canon lens, it will give even magnified closer detailed hair shots of a bug?
