Not so great, cause of composition and her squinting via the sun... but holy crap the bokeh on this lens is amazing!! I think I'm going to love this lens as a portrait lens. :)

I am close to purchasing the 2.8L, I already own the 2.8 usm.
Unfortunately I am not able to have both so I am selling my non L lens.
The question is, will I be disappointed, impressed or neither. This would be my first L lens. I hope to order it in the next 2 weeks..........if it's the thing to do lol.

Seems to me that the non L is a great sharp lens for macro, products and portraits but had ugly shape :D
The 100 L look pretty on the 60D and the 70D
You will not disappointed if you have some money to spend
i have used the 100 L on the 60D , 550D ,600D and the 5D2
its a very great lens

IS & weather sealing. Are those 2 things important to you and your style of shooting? If not, then you can just stick with the non-L.

The extra premium you pay for would be for IS & weather sealing. Sure the new lens design looks more modern, but that has nothing to do with IQ. :D

Weather sealing and IS mmm, well I am getting older and more shaky - so that justifies IS hehe, weather sealing is easy, I live in the UK lol.
No seriously I am after quuality of shot, do those that have upgraded feel the increase in quality (maybe) justifies the increase in price ?
Knowing what you know now would you still upgrade ?

I bought the 10mm L as my first serious prime lens, and I'd do it again easy. This lens spends more time on my camera than all the others combined.
If I already had a 100mm macro it might be a tougher decision, but the IS makes hand held shots easier for sure. If there's nothing else you have your eye set on, I'd go for it. Something like the MP-E 65mm might make me consider alternatives though... What are you shooting with it? The relatively slow AF is probably the only criticism I have of it.

Firstly I am still learning, macro photography has been my elixir. The MP-65mm is an awesome lens, but I feel the 100 L would give more allround versatility. The 65 would be an incredible auxillary lens.
Are their any 60D owners with the 100L who have been disappointed with the overall quality of the lens and it's results ?
Why should I get a 100L ? Apart from all the awesome shots found here.

@ Arch
Do you use your Raynox on the 100L ?

This is an awesome lens for creating bokeh and just to prove it I thought I'd have a go at "Shaped Bokeh"

I cut out the musical notes shape in a piece of black card, placed it over the front of the lens and the lights on the Christmas tree were transformed into the shape of the cut out. My little cherub here, as in the hymn is saying, Hark The Herald Angels Sing as she listens to the music.

very nice... do you mind posting up the cut out with it over the lens? Curious as to how big it needs to be, and how much of the lens it needs to cover / not cover in order to get that effect ...
If not, understood :)

I'm afraid I didn't take a pic of the set up of this shot to show you what you've asked for, but shaped bokeh is not as simple as you suggest, there's a number of factors to consider to get a reasonably sharp shot like this one. I've been asked a few times for this info over the past few days so I might write a comprehensive tutorial to cover everything about shaped bokeh. The good thing is that this lens is perfect for the job and I really learned how to use it properly by developing this technique.

Definitely do it. From what I've read, most people who upgraded had no regrets and for me the decision came down to having IS. I posted a pic a few pages back of a handheld shot at 1/30 sec. With my shaky ass hands, I personally don't think I could of taken this pic without IS. (not a great shot, but it was the very first pic I took at work when the camera arrived.)

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=13580250&postcount=3136

And you can't beat the current price it's at.

So is the IS actually more handy for macro shots than people make out? I hear a lot of people saying the IS is only worthwhile for non macro stuff, but surely up to 2 stops still helps a fair bit doesn't it??

Really love this lens, and can't decide if I should get the non L or this baby - would hope if I bought the non L that I wouldn't regret not getting the L later on...

My only macro usage is with a Raynox 250 clipped onto a 50/1.8 or 55-250, and I can honestly say on the 50 without IS is it pretty difficult at times!

The IQ does not depend on the body that much ,but on the 7D you'll get way better AF.

42 degrees? This time of the year, that would be a sauna for us. I won't even describe the -50+ below wind chills or having to go over a week with the real temp. -10 degrees. It's no fun, but its all worth it once summer comes. Chicago is one of the best cities during the summer. (Though summer lasts about 2 weeks) LOL

Certainly not a great shot at any stretch of the imagination.

I just wanted to see how close I could get if I attached a 1.4X tele (coupled it w/ a 12mm) tube. Shot pretty much as tight as I could get it.

The image is uncropped, the sensor is about 1.41" across and the object is 1/2".
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i61/rsamos/Daze/22.jpg

I know that there are methods for getting closer, or more magnification (like bellows) - I was simply curious as to what this combination could do.
