Excellent, now delete the pic from your computer...take this from experience. One week before the surprise I was showing my then fiance pics from a festival we went to that weekend. I just kept clicking "Next" and luckily she just happened to look away when the ring pic showed up. :confused:

I just got my 60D a week or so ago. I'm loving having a DSLR but I shoot a lot of macro images with my G12 (with adapters and add-on lenses) so I'd like to add that capacity to my 60D.

My question: do any of you have experience with both the non IS/non L version of this lens and the L version?.... I understand the value of IS for handheld shots. Are there any other significant benefits of the L over the non L version, including better IQ, better build, and/or ease of use, etc.?

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Im facing the same dilema atm...I cant decide between the non L or L version. I have just got myself a 5DMark3 so I will be using the lens on FF...should I just go with the non L?

I had the non IS version first. Image quality is really about the same but the IS makes it a bit more versatile.

I have the L version and 2 of my camera buddies have the non-L. We went for a camera walk and next day both bought the L version. IQ is better, we took the same pics with the same camera and settings, just changed the lens whilst tripod mouted.

I could take stunning shallow DoF pics at f/2.8 hand held, where they could not because of the lack of IS.

It's a no brainer, if you have the dollars, buy the L version ;)

Thanks for all the advice. I've been leaning in the L direction. I'll just have to save a bit longer... .and you know how lens lust goes. Patience.... X10. I do use a tripod a lot when shooting macro but I see so many other non-macro shots with these lenses, I think IS would come in handy. Another question: I got my 60D from Canon Refurbished and it came in with 144 shutter actuations and looked just like new..... are lenses the same level of risk from them or would I be better off just getting a new lens?

I'm also planning on going FF sometime so I'm trying to tailor most of my lens purchases with that in mind, though I had to get a more suited walk-around lens for my 60D, hence the 15-85.

I really didn't do serious testing but I thought it was splitting hairs to see much difference. The IS does help and it makes a difference even for macro. I upgraded for the IS feeling it would make the lens more versitle and it did.

I would say it's totally usable for action shots of pets. The AF is definitely not slow.

Haven't tried it with dogs yet, seems to work with moving cats just fine. :mrgreen:

What's this 100mm lens like at the likes of portraits and landscape photography? Would love to hear any views/thoughts/experience please.

the 100mm L lens with a relatively wide aperture, superb image quality, fast AF and an impressive IS implementation has a huge number of uses in addition to macro photography - including portraits, landscapes and indoor sports. Color and contrast are great. Bokeh is excellent - the 100mm L creates a very high quality foreground/background blur that is very pleasing when used for portraits.

This lens really is amazing. Besides sharpness, the color rendition and bokeh are absolute top-notch. The image stabilization is the icing on top of the icing.

Would you like to share your lighting setup ?

Look closely at the shadows and work it out. The lip is casting some shadow to the chin. The nose. The knife. And look close at the finger tips. Show sharpness should give a good idea of the light size. Try this yourself, or something like it. Then make the B&W out of the blue channel and another out of the green channel and compare.

Yes some amazing images from this lens, I am loving it so far! And the IS is just incredible really, even for macro it is much better than the non-L which (granted) I only played with a few times in the store. Brilliant lens the L though.

Thanks for comments.

The settings varied, but for the blue it was around 4.5 and 1/250. ISO was 400. I needed to adjust the white balance. I wasn't using a flash, just a lamp to the side..so it was very warmish straight out of the camera.

Pretty cool... I might have to try something like this

oh dear - I have just had my lens delivered and its faulty. The focus locks when I press the button but then drifts out of focus if the shot is not taken immediately - has anyone ever had that
I have tried it on all 3 focus range setting and its the same - the focus is set to 1 shot

A bit disappointed as I was really looking forward to using it

This is going to be absolutely evil to the people on the fence between buying the non-IS and IS version of this lens...

f/11, ISO 3200, and handheld at 1/6sec on a 1.6x crop body...so essentially 160mm at 1/6sec
